Chapter 2: Your Characters

Personally, my favorite part of writing is creating the characters. Most Warriors fans can think of a warrior name right off the bat but some of them can't think of their story as quick. Our brain has a habit of when we are looking for a unique and new story, it turns to already existing backstories and altering them so at first we think that story is unique and new. Here is an example:

Storm was a kittypet kitten who was born small. His older sisters bullied him for his size. One day Storm had enough and ran out into the woods to prove himself brave and strong. While in the woods he was met by a ShadowClan patrol and was attacked by an apprentice named Hawkpaw, who later became Hawktuft. Storm, barely alive, stumbled back to his home but one of his older sisters attacked him when he tried to return, giving him a scar over one eye. He went to Twolegplace in search of prey and home and he rose in ranks as he grew. One day he met a she-cat named Willow and they fell in love. Sadly, Willow was murdered and Storm snapped. He killed a passing rougue and became cruel and evil. Storm formed an evil clan named ToxicClan that planned to invade the forest to kill Hawktuft, now known as Hawkstar.

Does this backstory sound familiar to you at all? Sounds an awful lot like Scourge's backstory doesn't it? (Bullied because of size, attacked in forest by apprentice, Twolegplace, murdered another, BloodClan and ToxicClan blah blah blah). Not to be harsh but your story can get kind of boring if you have a very similar story to an already existing one. No surprising climax, dull edge, predictable, these three things can ruin your fanfiction. If you are creating a backstory for a character, give them some unique characteristics. A character in my fanfiction Foxgaze's Witness named Cricket is a good example:

Cricket grew up as a rogue in the forest beyond the Lake Territories. She lived with another rougue named Bear. One day when she was hunting alone she realized she was in clan territory. A patrol scented her and was chasing her and she ran from them. To her bad luck, she fell into a hole with only rose bushes growing in it. For half a moon, Cricket was trapped and she was forced to eat the thorny plants to stay alive, permanently scarring her throat and giving her a ragged, scratchy voice. Bear came and rescued her and Cricket decided she wanted revenge on the clan for making her suffer so badly.

The next thing I want to talk about is what your character looks like. To have a serious fanfiction, you need serious, real, believable markings on your cats. This is not a believable description:

Glowclaw- black tom with 13 white diamond shapes running down his back and red eyes.

This is not believable. To start, don't be so specific with the amount of markings, secondly have you ever seen a cat with diamond shapes running down its back? (Me: Unless you live by a leaking nuclear power plant of course). Of course you havent. Also, a cat can't really have natural red eyes. Same with purple, pink, silver or any other unatural color. This would be a better description:

Glowclaw-black tom with white specks and green eyes.

That's better. Remember, you can have a description for a cat you haven't seen before. For example: Blackfoot/star. Blackstar is a white cat with black paws but he was still in the Warriors series. That is okay because his markings are believable. Glowclaw's markings also are believable and they aren't something you would see every day.

The next thing I want to talk about is names. I have seen too many names like Vampirefang and Griffinwing. Stay away from names with prefixes like: Griffin, Dragon, Werewolf, Vampire ect.

You also shouldnt really do names like Legendheart or Spiritwind. It makes that cat look and sound overly special.

Also stay away from those point blank evil names: Bloodheart, Brokensoul, Deathclaw (I have seen way too many of these, trust me), Killerclaw, ect.

If you want an evil character give them a name that doesn't sound evil at first like: Fishtooth, Mothfoot, Applepelt, or even Cloudpool. It's your story.
