MAITHILI

Wrapping her fingers around mine, Diya squealing in excitement was filling me with moments I missed. My heart filled up in pain of missing everything, every little moment of joy, missing my people, missing him……

He was walking right behind me, his steps matching mine, as if waiting for people around to disappear and he could just catch me. I so wish he could catch me….. Ughhhhhhh, I screamed quietly.

Different feeling was bubbling inside of me, as if something is going to change or something is going to happen, it felt like mixed feelings, fear, excitement , happiness and a lot more. I couldn't even think straight at this moment, his scent was intoxicating me, my heart was pounding and my mind blabbering to me to hug him and feel the peace and calm and ease, but It's not possible, not anymore.

Running through the corridor, flashbacks of memories squinted my heart. Our fun banter, his teasing me and me running behind him with puffy faces, those giggles, lying carefree on grass, under glazing stars……

Even our silence made our fussy mind calm, eyes spoke thousand of emotions, fingers tangled gave a sense of safety and security.

“BB, your room is here.” Diya uttered, shocking us. She never called me BB before, never. Except for Atharva no one knew what BB meant.

With frowning eyes, I asked “BB?”

More than me, someone else had a hint of shock mixed with surprise on his face. Shashvata stepped forward, now Facing us, in a calm but deep husky voice he asked “Do you know what BB stands for?”

I can feel shift of emotions in those deep ocean eyes of his, they were shining, he had no glimpse of smile on His face but his eyes were surely smiling, but soon his eyes turned scattered, when diya replied pouting “Atharva bhaisa calls her BB, I liked how it sounded as if It's actually a thing and she is BB. I didn't think about it. I am sorry Maithili Jiji.” She shifted, Facing me. Her eyes were moist.

I cupped her cheeks, wiping a lone tear dripping out of the corner of her eye. With a sarcastic tone I said “Atharva is an idiot. Don't you dare apologize to me, but do not call me that. Title doesn't belong to me, not anymore.” My voice broke, muttering the last line. Calming myself I flashed a 440 watt smile, caging that drop of tear ready to run down my cheek.

“You both get some rest, fresh n up and then Let's have a blast like the good old days.” Bhai-sa interrupted.

Nodding, I turned towards the room.

Soon, Bhai-sa and Diya left. It was just me and him, threshold distance apart.

His eyes met mine, still carrying the power to freeze my soul.

Breaking the eye contact, I closed the door. Leaning, I shut my eyes, tears dripping down my cheeks. His fragrance filled up my nostril and now I want him even more.

Door was shut, but a different door that I closed years ago opened wide in one fell swoop, and shutting it back was now as difficult as catching the moon and stars.

I got distracted by the phone's vibration, unlocked it and checked the phone, there was a message from Atharva, "20 minutes only, can't wait to see you, BB.”

The smile lost in my restless mind had returned. Wiping away the stream of flowing tears, I moved forward into the room. With my increasing steps, my eyes were falling on everything decorated in the room. I was related to everything, Like the curtains hanging on the window, in which he and I got entangled and fell down, Or that vase kept on the table, which I liked while visiting the fair, Or, the table lamp I painted, Everything was decorated neatly, delicately, Like it was just yesterday when all this happened.

While looking around, my eyes fell on the anklet kept on the dressing table, there was a note kept beside. I went ahead and picked up the anklet, it was my anklet. Years ago, I had lost it somewhere while running here and there in this mansion. In the hope of finding it, I still carry other pair of it with me.

Putting it back, I picked up the note. As soon as I opened it, my eyes filled with tears. All this, everything, from the curtains to the lamp, and these anklets, all this was done by Shashvata.

Note read as,
“Love, I did not wish to return it, but my ears had longed for the tinkling sound of these anklets. Therefore, please wear them, and once again dissolve their tinkling echoes in every particle of this mansion.
Your Bub”

He had so gently preserved what I had lost years ago. My anklets, my memories, and my heart.

Frowning, I giggled. Overturning my bag on the bed, I took out a pair of anklet and picked up another pair placed in front of me. I started wearing them giggling, the memory of seeing him in someone else's arms flashed before my eyes like a picture.

There was a ping in the heart, the flood which was till now within the scope of the eyes, now seemed to be free from captivity. A stream of tears flowed, with each tear, our memories were fading one by one.

I was sitting curled up on the ground, immersed in the depth of memories, a knock on the door pulled me.

Pulling myself together, I got up and headed towards the door. I was taking deep breaths as I wiped the tears from my eyes. I have to be patient till Bhaisa's marriage, and then I will go back. Everything will be as before.

Other part of me laughed. Mocking me, do you really think it would be easy? Being away for so many years, yet your heart beats for him. No matter what, you'll always love him. And, this time, it won't be easy to leave, and he won't let you leave, not anymore hide and seek, Mitthu.

Clearing the fog, I wiped my cheeks, taking a deep breath with a wide smile, I unlocked the door.

With wide arms, he was standing there to hug me. Ready to take me into his embrace and comfort my broken soul. Dropping that everything is Good, act, I hid myself in his arms, crying like a little girl, complaining about her life to her father. Whoever would witness it, would be in awee and kind of shocked as well, to see me get broken in his arms.

It was Atharva, my best friend.

He was patting my back, comforting me, calming me down. Bursting out everything inside me, my eyes went dry, calming myself, hiccuping, I broke the hug. Looking over Atharva's shoulder, my gaze met his.

He was standing there, stiff. His gaze fixated on me, one hand in his pocket and the other holding the phone to his ear.

I could see the changes in his eyes, his eyes were going from soft to dark.

He tightened his grip on the phone, just a little more and the phone would shatter into pieces. Clenching his jaw, not taking his eyes off mine, he took his steps towards us, but after taking two steps forward, nodding his head, he turned and walked away, as if someone on the other end of the phone had asked him to do something.
