The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as Alex and Olivia packed up their car for a weekend getaway to the beach. It was going to be Lucas's first time seeing the ocean, and both of them were buzzing with excitement. Olivia had insisted on packing everything they might possibly need—an umbrella for shade, sunscreen, a little beach tent, and plenty of snacks. Alex couldn't help but smile at her wife's enthusiasm. It felt good to see Olivia so happy and relaxed after all they had been through.
"Are you ready, Lucas?" Alex asked in a playful tone as she secured him in his car seat. Lucas cooed in response, his wide blue eyes sparkling as he looked up at her. Alex's heart swelled with love. He was only three months old, but he had already brought so much joy into their lives. She leaned down to kiss his chubby cheek before closing the car door and hopping into the driver's seat.
The drive to the beach was peaceful, with Lucas dozing off to the gentle hum of the car engine and the soft music playing on the radio. Olivia rested her hand on Alex's leg as she drove, their fingers intertwining. They talked about everything and nothing—about work, about their plans for the future, about how excited they were to see Lucas's reaction to the ocean.
When they arrived at the beach, the sun was shining brightly, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore filled the air. Alex found a spot near the water where they could set up their things. She laid out the blanket while Olivia set up the beach tent and placed Lucas inside, shielding him from the sun.
"This is perfect," Olivia said as she settled onto the blanket beside Alex, leaning her head on her shoulder.
Alex smiled, wrapping her arm around Olivia's waist. "It really is. I've been looking forward to this all week."
Lucas stirred in his tent, his tiny hands reaching out as if he wanted to explore the world beyond the safety of his little shelter. Alex reached over and gently picked him up, cradling him in her arms as she carried him closer to the water.
"Look, Lucas," she said softly, kneeling down so that he could see the waves lapping at the shore. "This is the ocean. Isn't it beautiful?"
Lucas blinked up at her, his expression serious for a moment as he took in the vast expanse of water before him. Then, as if sensing his mother's joy, a smile spread across his face, and he let out a delighted giggle.
Olivia joined them, her camera in hand, snapping pictures of the moment. "He's going to love looking back at these one day," she said, her voice full of warmth.
The day passed in a blur of laughter and sunshine. They took turns dipping Lucas's toes in the water, building little sandcastles, and playing with him on the blanket. By the time the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the beach, Lucas was fast asleep, worn out from all the excitement.
As they packed up to head home, Alex felt a deep sense of contentment. This was what life was supposed to be—full of love, laughter, and the little moments that made everything worth it.

A few days later, life had settled back into its usual rhythm. Alex was taking care of Lucas at home while Olivia was at work. Everything seemed normal, routine, until the phone call that would shatter their world.
Alex was in the middle of feeding Lucas when her phone rang. She answered it without thinking, expecting it to be Olivia calling to check in. But the voice on the other end was unfamiliar, serious.
"Is this Alex?" the voice asked.
"Yes," Alex replied, her heart starting to pound in her chest. "Who is this?"
"This is Dr. Mathews from City General Hospital. I'm afraid there's been an accident."
Time seemed to stop as the doctor explained that Olivia had been in a car crash on her way home from work. A truck had run a red light and slammed into her car, causing severe injuries. She was in surgery, and the doctors were doing everything they could, but it didn't sound good.
