Alex had always prided herself on being strong, on being able to take whatever life threw at her and keep moving forward. But the last two months had tested her in ways she never thought possible. She was navigating life as a single mother while carrying twins, all while dealing with the gnawing fear that Olivia might never wake up.

Their two-bedroom apartment, once cozy and full of love, now felt small and suffocating. Every corner held memories of the life they had planned together—Lucas's nursery with its pastel colors, the framed photos of their wedding day, and Olivia's bookshelves stacked with novels she'd never gotten the chance to finish. Alex knew they would need more space soon, especially with two more little ones on the way. She had started looking at houses online during late nights when Lucas was asleep, scrolling through listings and trying to imagine a new future for them in a bigger home. But each time she found something that might work, she was haunted by the thought of moving without Olivia, of leaving behind the life they had built together.

Despite the emotional and physical exhaustion, there were bright spots. Lucas, now five months old, was reaching new milestones almost daily. His babbling had become more frequent, his little mouth forming sounds that were almost words. He was growing so quickly, and Alex could hardly believe how fast time was passing. One morning, as she sat on the living room floor with him, Lucas suddenly pushed himself up, wobbling unsteadily before sitting up on his own. Alex's heart swelled with pride, tears springing to her eyes as she cheered him on.

"You're getting so big, my little man," she whispered, pulling him into her arms and kissing the top of his head. Lucas giggled, his tiny hands reaching up to pat her face, and for a moment, the weight of the world felt a little lighter.

But the challenges continued to mount. House hunting was more stressful than she had anticipated. With every new listing, Alex found herself comparing it to the life she had imagined with Olivia—the spacious backyard where they would watch Lucas and his siblings play, the cozy kitchen where they would prepare family meals, the master bedroom where they would lie together, talking about their days. It was hard to let go of those dreams and imagine something new, something different.

She had visited a few houses, dragging Lucas along in his stroller as she toured empty rooms that echoed with the possibilities of a new life. But nothing felt quite right. She wanted Olivia's input, her opinion on where their family should grow and thrive. But Olivia was still in that hospital bed, her fate uncertain, and Alex was left to make these decisions alone.

One afternoon, after a particularly frustrating day of house hunting, Alex returned to the apartment with Lucas, feeling more exhausted than ever. She had just finished feeding him when he turned to her, his bright blue eyes locking onto hers.

"Mama," he babbled, his voice high and clear.

Alex froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Did you just...?"

"Mama," Lucas said again, this time with more certainty. His little face was lit up with a smile, as if he knew just how much those simple sounds meant to her.

Tears welled up in Alex's eyes, and she pulled Lucas close, holding him tightly as she whispered, "Yes, baby, I'm your mama. Oh, Lucas, you have no idea how much I needed that."

As she sat there, rocking him gently, her phone rang, breaking through the moment. She hesitated for a second before answering, still holding Lucas close.

"Hello?" she said, her voice thick with emotion.

"Is this Alex?" The voice on the other end was familiar, but it took her a moment to place it.

"Yes, this is Alex," she replied, her heart starting to race.

"This is Dr. Mathews from City General Hospital," the voice said, and suddenly, Alex's world narrowed to the phone in her hand, every other sound fading away. "I'm calling to let you know that Olivia has woken up."
