The State of awareness.
That moment between being awake and sleeping.
That is where Sable Evermore lived ever since that day. The day of her crime and the death of her best friend. And ever since she was stuck in a perpetual state of just surviving. That was of course until her 19th birthday brought guards to her cell.
That morning in lockup had been as normal as it can be. Her cellmate had been floated only a week ago and there was apparently no one there to fill the space. So she had been alone, for the first time since she was in isolation. Waking up was fine and getting her school bag ready with the stuff they had deemed "okay" enough for her to keep went into it. A small golden compass, a watch, and a needle and some thread was all she had of her life before. Messing with them soon began to bore her, as she waited for the guards to bring her to breakfast.
But then they came barreling in.
Four of them all with guns and loud footsteps. One had an angry voice commanding Sable to stand. Saying nothing, and clutching her bag to her chest, she stood. When the guards rushed forward she quickly and silently took a step back. But, they overwhelmed her. Grabbing her arm and putting on a weird silver armband. The pain was quick but alarmed her, as she felt a flick of her old fire start to shine.
"Hey, what the hell do you think you're doing, ow that fucking hurts." Her monotone voice only hinted at the anger that simmered underneath.
And yet the guards continued pushing her out the door, being careful to not let her go. The sight outside the cell was worse than she could have predicted.
Shouts and screams filled the otherwise quiet halls of the Sky-block. Guards pooled around the kids like the moon to the earth, hovering and always there to remind you to stay in place. Some of the kids were screaming and thrashing, crying and fighting. Others had already accepted the fate of death. While some were even shocked with electricity too keep them subdued.
And yet no one was killed or severely injured.
Something was happening.
Something the guards aren't happy about. Could it be that we were being killed or... Feeling the rough hand on her shoulder made Sable sink further into her meditative state, following the guards that pushed and shoved her with mean touches. Sable didn't say a word or fight back. With her long brown hair covering most of her face and the way she looked dead while still breathing it didn't surprise too many people that she just obeyed the guards.
And through the hordes of people they walked each kid they passed, being noted by Sable. Every step they took and every noise she heard was being stored in her brain and noted as something for later.
A right turn down into a stairwell. Down two stories then taking a left down the hall. Having to walk further down and faster to avoid a down right ballistic, aggressive blonde guy who was clearly older than her. And going straight into a different Stairwell going all the way down this time.
There the small group of guards and Sable reached their destination, an airlock into a room with a bunch of chairs. Being pushed in she was put in a chair at the end of a row having an open chair to her right, and nothing to her left.
Then the guards start to leave one by one, until the last one says, "Put on the seat belt, you're going to want it for where you're going." Then he left smiling at his attempt at being dramatic. Would've been more effective if he hadn't tripped over himself in his exit but it's whatever. Anyways Sable still complied and waited.
She waited as others filled in the seats. Shouts and murmurs filled her ears. Drowning out the hum of the ark, an ever present sound in the sky block, one that doesn't go quiet easily. Whispers surrounded her as bodies started to fill in the space, no one taking the seat to her right.
