Chapter: 10

24/7 Restaurant

I walk out of my house quickly, rubbing the tears off my eyes cursorily in my fretfulness. What I'm carrying with me is just my phone, which I held in my hand, and the wallet in my pants pocket. I'm heading to walk to the bus stop, the same place that I take the bus to school in the mornings. I sat down to make my mind cool down when I arrived. Before picking up my phone, think of texting Dale, but hold back the hand.

Dale told me that tonight he would go out to have dinner with his mom. That means they are going to have family time with each other, which I shouldn't interrupt. Dale and Esme helped me a lot, and I think this time it was me that should help myself and shouldn't disturb them that they are going out to have a nice time.

I'm waiting for the bus with anxiety in my mind. I'm really worried about Barry more than anything else at the moment. The more I imagine that he has another dog running towards him to bite him, the more it makes me really restless. Barry needs to stay there to look it over first. I'm not sure if he has the same severe condition as I thought or not. But as far as I know, he would be so pained.

I compressed my lips tight before I searched to find the hospital, which is the closest to the park in downtown, when I was thinking of it.

In around 15 minutes, the bus had arrived at the bus stop. From here to downtown, it didn't take much time. But because the sky was so dark and the time right now is already past 7 and a half p.m., I was scared that the hospital would close before I arrived there, and the most scary thing is that tonight I might not meet and see Barry in time.

I sit and make myself calm down on the bus, which is very cold, until I have to use my arms to wrap my body to make it warmer. The more I think about Barry, the more it makes the edge of my eyes intensely hot, but I can hold back the tears until the bus finally arrives downtown.

I take off the bus at the park before running towards the hospital that is closest to the park. The hospital is opposite the park; it's just a two-lane road. I pushed the door open hurriedly and ran to the person who stood at the information counter.

"Excuse me." She raised her face from the tablet to look at me. "I'm the owner of a brown Pit Bull dog, and it received treatment in the early evening for getting attacked by another dog. Is he here?"

"Oh um... I'm so sorry. We can check for you, but after two minutes, we will close. The time to visit is over." She looked over the wall clock, then said it.

"But I really would like to meet him. Please, I can take just a few minutes."

"Um..." She looked at me with hesitation.

"Please! I just want to see him, just for a moment." I scurried to speak out. I could feel my tears overflowing again.

"Okay, okay. But I can give you just a few minutes. It's the rule." I nodded quickly, looked at what she said, and she turned her face down to find the information on the computer screen.

"Brown Pit Bull... What is the dog's name?"

"Barry." She nodded.

"Okay, please follow me this way."

"Thank you! Thank you so much." She smiled and nodded to me before walking ahead.

I walk into a room that has a lot of cages for sick animals. I look both ways, back and forth, to find Barry. Tears want to flow now.

"This way." She gestured with her hand to let me see the innermost animal cage.

"Barry..."

My heart is hurting from what I saw.
