Age: Eighteen

I looked at my wrist watch which showed five thirty five in the evening. Aavya is an hour and thirty five minutes late. The sun has already set and the birds are going back to their respective houses but she isn't here yet.  “She said she will come. Aavya cant break the promise not that she breaks.” I murmured to myself, assuring that she would come to meet me.

Where was she? I thought about calling her, but she isn't even picking up her phone. I had been so sure she'd be here by now. Aavya was never late. Something must have happened. My mind started to wander to all the possible reasons for her delay, filling up with negative thoughts first and by every passing second it started to become difficult to stand and wait for her.

Perhaps, maybe I should look after her. Just when I was about to walk or maybe run to search for her, a familiar figure ran towards me. My eyes expected it to be her, a feeling of relief taking over me but soon it got washed away when I saw my friend Athrav running in my direction.

“Aavya?” He paused, taking a few deep breaths before looking at me. “What Aavya? Is she there?” I say running towards the pathway he came from when a voice stops me. “She isn't here but you need to go back to the competition or perhaps you’ll be expelled from the championship which means no national level competition, Vihaan.”

“Go back, Atharv, I am going to search for her. I believe something unfortunate has happened or else you know Aavya is so punctual and if she is late today something is wrong.” I continued with my steps towards the exit when Atharav jogs towards me stopping in front of me. “I believe she is okay but if you go back, your swimming career will come to an end. For god's sake Vihaan you didn't fight everyone for this.”

Today Athrav is out of character, he usually doesn't speak like this today but i know what i have to choose.

I chose her.

Over my career.

Over my favourite sports,

My passion.

Me: Jhanvi isn't here.

Atharv: Oh? Yes, she is here. I just saw her.

Me: Okay.

With that I hung up and lifted my feet to walk towards the door when a voice reached my ears.

“Ahh, my eyes!” I turned towards the owner of the voice. A wave of goosebumps covering my skin, taking me hostage while all I do is to look at the person my eyes have been craving for.

My eyes blurred with tears and I let the year flow. Did I perhaps get drunk again? No, I didn't even touch alcohol because I didn't want to mess my friend’s wedding then how come I get—

Aavya is standing in front of me, not exactly close but she is.
