Goodnight Odette...

___________________________________________________________

Once more my eyes shot open but instead of overgrown trees and shaded roots under my feet I was shrouded in darkness. A faint, luminant rectangle around the doorframe was my only source of light. The single little light spread a warm sense of safety throughout me. The simple thought of having a seemingly simple escape a mere ten feet away from me provided me solace despite my less than favorable situation.

A sense of freedom.

An escape from whatever lies waiting for me in this potential torment.

No matter what lay behind it I knew it would be there to save me from whatever was about to come.

The darkness that encircled me made it hard, no, impossible to make out my surroundings. An air hung about the room, one of sinister meanings. My stomach folded into knots inside me as I awaited what was in store for me.

Seconds ticked by into minutes before minutes ticked into what seemed like eternity. An endless turmoil played in my mind.

Do I wait?

Let the monstrous plot of what lies ahead approach me itself or do I take action?

My impatience compels me towards the latter as I spread my palms flat against the tiled floor.

The tiles seemed to be in a small square pattern. They were clean. No dust, no chipped paint, no residue in the grout. The room smelled faintly of bleach. Somebody took pride in keeping this place clean, but why?

My train of thought halted on its tracks as soon as I felt something sticky coat my hand. I brought my hand up to try and make out what it was. A strong scent of copper overwhelmed my senses, making bile rise in my throat at the sudden realization that washed over me.

Blood.

The room was stark clean except for a thick puddle of blood coating the floor.

Why is it here? How much is there? What happened?

Why is there blood?

The instant my mind grasped the concept of blood coating its extremities, flashes of possibilities filled my mind. Thousands of unanswerable questions haunted my thoughts. The darkness framing my vision prohibited me from having even a hint of an idea as to what all is around me.

My eyes begin to strain as I take in a blinding pure light that spreads throughout the room. The brightest hue of light kept me from seeing anything but white for several minutes.

Eventually my eyes adjusted to the spontaneous attack against my retinas and my hands dropped from my face as I took in the horrors in front of me.

One thing filled my line of sight and one thing only. They were all around me. I couldn't escape the image.

Bodies.

I crumbled at the sight. My defenses broke. My mind shattered. The support from my hand and knees gave way beneath me.

A splat sound rang out around me. It echoed through the room bouncing off the walls as it moved and snaked its way back to my ears. It resonated around me as thoughts spilled into my consciousness.

Bile climbed its way up from my stomach at one single thought that stood out among the rest. My face and torso laid limp in a lake of copper scented crimson.

The blood.

I held my breath in disgust making my best attempt to block out the putrid smell of vomit that had just heaved its way out of me.
