Riya
The days blurred together in a haze of sleepless nights and mounting tension. I couldn't concentrate in class, couldn't focus on my work. All I could think about was Jeet–his piercing eyes, his knowing smirk, the way he seemed to be everywhere I turned.
And the worst part? I was starting to crave it.
I told myself it was just the stress, the pressure of always being second-best, but deep down, I knew better. Jeet had gotten under my skin, infected my thoughts, my dreams. I hated him for it, but I couldn't resist him. It was like a drug, this twisted need to be near him, to feel his gaze on me.
To be seen.
But something was wrong. I could feel it in the pit of my stomach, a gnawing sense of unease that wouldn't go away. It wasn't just Jeet–I was being watched. I could feel eyes on me, all the time, even when I was alone.
Especially when I was alone.
It started with small things-footsteps echoing in empty hallways, shadows flickering just out of sight. I told myself it was nothing, that I was just being paranoid. But the feeling grew stronger, more insistent, until it was all I could think about.
Someone was watching me. And it wasn't Jeet.
The thought sent a chill down my spine as I hurried back to my dorm one evening, the shadows stretching long and dark across the campus. The air was thick with the scent of rain, the sky a bruised purple, threatening to burst at any moment. I clutched my bag tighter, my heart pounding in my chest as I quickened my pace.
I reached my building and fumbled with my keys, my hands shaking. I could feel the weight of those unseen eyes on me, could almost hear the whispers in the darkness.
But when I finally got inside, the feeling didn't go away. If anything, it got worse. The silence of my room was suffocating, pressing down on me from all sides. I dropped my bag on the floor and collapsed onto my bed, burying my face in my pillow, trying to block it all out.
But the whispers wouldn't stop.
They were everywhere, echoing in my mind, growing louder, more insistent. I couldn't understand the words, but I knew what they meant. I knew what they wanted.
They wanted me to give in.
To surrender to the darkness.
Jeet
I couldn't get Riya out of my head. She was like a fire burning in my mind, consuming everything in its path. The more I tried to distance myself, the more I was drawn to her, like a moth to a flame. But this wasn't just about desire–it was something darker, something I didn't fully understand.
The night I'd watched her from outside her dorm, I'd felt something shift. The game we were playing was no longer just a game. It had become something else, something dangerous.
And I wasn't sure I could control it.
But there was something else, too-something I couldn't shake. That feeling of being watched, of someone lurking in the shadows, observing our every move. I'd tried to ignore it, to push it out of my mind, but it was always there, gnawing at the edges of my consciousness.
Someone was watching us. I was sure of it.
It wasn't just paranoia–it was real. And it was getting harder to ignore.
That evening, as I made my way across campus, the air heavy with the promise of rain, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being followed. I glanced over my shoulder, scanning the empty quad, but there was no one there.
Still, the feeling persisted, a cold knot in the pit of my stomach.
I quickened my pace, heading for the library, hoping to lose myself in the quiet comfort of the stacks. But even as I settled into a corner with my books, the sense of unease lingered. I couldn't concentrate, couldn't focus on the words in front of me.
All I could think about was Riya.
I needed to see her, to make sure she was okay. But that wasn't the only reason. I needed to see her because I was starting to lose control, and she was the only thing that could ground me, the only thing that made sense in the chaos that was slowly consuming me.
I packed up my things and headed to her dorm, my heart racing as I approached her door. But when I knocked, there was no answer.
"Riya?" I called out, my voice barely above a whisper.
Still nothing.
Panic gripped me as I knocked again, harder this time. I knew she was in there–I could feel her presence on the other side of the door. I needed to see her, to make sure she was safe, to know that I wasn't the only one feeling this way.
Finally, the door creaked open, and there she was, standing in the dim light of her room, her eyes wide with fear.
"Jeet," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"What's wrong?" I asked, stepping inside, closing the door behind me.
She shook her head, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for something. "I... I don't know," she said, her voice barely audible. "I feel like... like someone's watching me."
My blood ran cold. So she felt it too.
"Have you seen anyone?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"No," she whispered, her gaze locking with mine. "But I can feel it, Jeet. It's like... like they're always there, just out of sight."
I reached out, taking her hand in mine, feeling the tremor in her grip. "You're not imagining it," I said quietly. "I feel it too."
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and relief. "What do we do?"
"We stay together," I said, my voice firm. "Whatever this is, whatever's happening... we face it together."
She nodded, but the fear in her eyes didn't fade. It was a fear I understood all too well, because it was the same fear that had been growing inside me since the night I'd watched her from the shadows.
A fear that maybe we weren't alone in this.
That maybe something else was lurking in the darkness, watching, waiting.
And as the storm outside finally broke, the rain hammering against the windows, I knew that this was just the beginning. The beginning of something we couldn't control, couldn't stop.
But as I looked into Riya's eyes, I knew one thing for certain.
I wasn't going to let her face it alone.
