Jeremy smirked, the cigarette dangling from his lips. He should have killed her when he had the chance. This girl hates him so much and would retaliate if she gets the chance. “Keep an eye on her. Kill her when you get the chance and don’t leave any trace behind. You can leave now,” Jeremy said, focusing back on his work.

  Next Morning

           The Wilders Residence
At the dining table, Mrs Nyla kept playing with her food. She was so confused now. How was she going to convince her son to marry Maya? Justin noticed his mom had not touched her food and became worried.

“Mom, you haven’t touched your food. Is something bothering you?”
Mrs Nyla was brought back to earth by her son’s question.

“Of course, son, I’m okay. Don’t worry about me. Mommy will be fine,” she said, continuing to eat. She suddenly stopped, as if she had just remembered something. Justin noticed this and worry was drawn all over his face. What could make his mother so uneasy this morning? Before he could speak, his mom interrupted him.

“There is this old friend of mine whose relative was accused of something she didn’t do and was sent to jail. I made my lawyer revisit her case after a year, and we were able to prove her innocence. She will be released this afternoon, and I have no idea where she will go. I tried contacting my friend but to no avail. She’s a nice girl, and I want to help her, but I just don’t know how,” Mrs Nyla explained, hoping her son would believe her.

“Mom, you don’t need to stress yourself over this. It can affect your health. You can bring her over to stay with you temporarily and get her a place to stay. I don’t have a problem, and I don’t think Dad will. Besides, it’ll be good for you to have someone to talk to since Dad is not always around,” Justin said. He placed his cutlery down and was ready to leave when he heard his mother saying, “Can you come with me?” He was puzzled but didn’t think much of it.

“Fine, let me know when you are ready,” he said and left directly.

“Yes!” Mrs Sarah muttered softly with so much joy in her heart. Her first plan worked. It’s just a matter of time before he falls in love with Maya. She focused on her food and continued eating.

       SOMEWHERE IN THE SUBURBS

“Boss, Maya will be released this afternoon,” the guy said with his head down. Jeremy stopped smoking instantly. If he allowed Maya to live, it wouldn’t be good for him. He was so angry. This girl was becoming a thorn in his flesh. He lit a cigarette and tried to calm down. He turned and told the guy,

“Kill her once she is released. Leave no traces behind.”

                     Afternoon

At noon, Mrs Nyla went with her son to the women’s prison. They first went to the warden’s office to get all the necessary documents. They spent about an hour finalizing everything. After they were done, they thanked the man and left to pick up Maya.

“Maya Suarez, you can leave now. I must say, you are quite capable. How did you convince The Wilders to get you out of here?” the policeman said, not loud but clear enough for everyone to hear.

“I have been behind bars for two years now, and my family hasn’t been able to get me out. Not even a family member has visited her before, but see, she’s leaving. I’m sure she pulled some strings.”

“Yes, you’re right. I wouldn’t be surprised if she slept with the warden.”

“Oh no, such a scheming slut. What at all do they see in her? She’s not even that pretty.”

Lisa heard all this and became furious. “You all should shut up. None of you know what this innocent girl has gone through. We all committed crimes, but this girl here did nothing. She deserves this freedom.” After Lisa finished speaking, they all remained silent and retired to their beds. Even the policeman felt a little remorseful for what he said.

“Don’t pay attention to them. Promise me that you’ll be safe out there. Don’t forget to let me know when you need any help. I love you so much and I’ll miss you a lot,” Lisa said, tears streaming down her face. She would miss her so much.

“Come on, baby, stop crying. I promise you I’ll be safe out there. As soon as I’m done with this, I’ll revisit your case and get you out of here,” Maya reassured Lisa. They hugged until the policeman interrupted, “Enough, we have to leave now. I don’t have all day.” Lisa and Maya parted ways, and Maya left.

Justin carried his usual cold expression and hissed, “Mom, what is keeping that girl? Does she want to continue staying here? I have lots of things to do and I can’t wait any longer.” Mrs Nyla was also worried. What was keeping Maya? Could it be that Jeremy had already killed her? No, the warden would have told her.

She pushed these thoughts aside and calmly comforted her son, “Don’t be angry, son. I’m sure she’ll be here soon. Let’s wait a little…” Before Mrs Nyla could finish, she realized her son wasn’t paying attention but was looking somewhere else. She followed his gaze and realized he was staring at Maya. She smiled inwardly, knowing that it wouldn’t take long before her son fell for Maya.

She hid her smile and said, “Here she is. Happy freedom, dear. I am so glad you are free now. I tried contacting your aunt but to no avail, so you will be staying with me. Meet my son, Justin Wilder.”
