warnings: subtle mentions of dark thoughts, mentions of death and implied suicide

There's a loud noise of chatter around the area, filling whatever air of silence took place between a conversation. [Name] was taking a walk around a station, waiting for their ride. Alongside them was none other than [Best Friend]. The two have always been seen with each other. That's how close they are.

They strolled side by side, no rush to get anywhere, no destination in mind. Just a simple walk among two college students to pass the time. They could've sat on a bench, but, of course, they don't. Walking around aimlessly was much better, that could add some steps into their day.

"Do you think BSD will end in the Meursault arc?" a random question. As always, they hop topics from one thing to another. From what they did for the day, their mood, the weather, catching up on trends, and now to Bungou Stray Dogs. It's fascinating how their brain doesn't hurt from how fast it switches subjects.

The [Hair Color]-haired college student turned to their side, looking at their friend. "Nah," they shoved their hands in the pockets of the pants they were wearing, kicking a stray can of garbage closer to an overloaded trash can. "Watch the world explode in like, chapter 120, or something," [Name] remarked, earning a chuckle from [Best Friend].

"With the way the manga is going, that just might be possible," he added, a carefree smile on his face. [Best Friend] had always seemed like that. Carefree. Despite often stepping up as the more mature one of the duo, he always had an air of tranquility. "I don't think Chuuya and Fyodor will simply die like that,"

[Name] agrees, nodding their head. Chuuya will survive, they know it. He's the strongest character in the franchise, after all. Perhaps Asagiri is just playing with his readers. At least they hope so. [Name] might seriously riot if one of their favorites dies.

"[Nickname]," [Best Friend] suddenly called, his blue eyes staring off into the floor. There was a certain tone in his words, something about it seems like what he would say next would be serious. [Name] could tell from a single look that the conversation's about to go down the trenches of negativity.

"Hm?" [Name] hummed, gesturing that they were listening. Their mind was already cracking out its gears in full speed in order to keep the conversation light. They hoped they could come up with something in order to keep [Best Friend] from getting negative and eventually spiral in his rather messed up mind.

There was a while of silence. Neither comfortable nor awkward. Just silence. It was uncomfortable, and [Name] wanted to repeat what they just said, because it was probable that he didn't think that they were listening. Maybe they should interfere with a different subject, acting like they didn't hear it? Or maybe–

"What would you do if I were gone?"

...

Now they wish they did cut the topic short.

"I..." [Name] trailed off, racking their brain for an answer—a light one. One that wouldn't make this conversation more serious. "I'd look for you, if you were missing," they answered, purposefully acting dumb. It was a shitty and desperate attempt to keep the chat less serious.

[Best Friend] glanced at them through his peripherals, raising an eyebrow as he, as expected, caught on to the goal behind their words. "[Nickname] you're not as stupid as that. Come on, try better when you're attempting to redirect conversations to your liking," he pointed out. "Seriously, though. What will you do?"

... What will they do without him?

It wasn't like their life was dependent on [Best Friend]. [Name] knows that they are far more than capable of handling things on their own. And they are.

It's just that they really can't see a life without him.

God, [Name] hated this subject. More than hate. They loathed talking about what they would do if he was gone. All because they know that, probably, one day, his suicidal thoughts will win over him. They know it was possible that one day, he'll dive off the deep end—and they, despite doing their best, wouldn't be able to protect him from himself.

[Name] hated being unable to protect the ones that carved their presence into their heart. [Name] loathed being unable to protect those they love.

Maybe that's why they hate it whenever one of the cast is on the brink of death, and they can't do anything but be helpless. Especially the ones they found getting close to them. [Name] sees a trait of [Best Friend] in the majority of them. From things like their personality, to even the minute details like sayings they quote that he quotes too.

Despite being from another world, [Name] found themself caring for the characters in here. Especially the ones in the Armed Detective Agency. They could consider them a second chance. A second chance to finally be able to protect those they care about, after failing the first time.

[Name] wants to take that second trial. If fate decided to give them a chance to protect, they'll take it. This time, they'll go beyond doing the best they can in order to save those they care about.

They promise they won't fail, this time.
