Dragon Tamer, Stella and Nostra were sitting in the Netherbane tavern. They could see the sunrise through the opened window and feel the fresh morning air. Soon they will be leaving to bring the end crystal to the Frostbourne castle.
Suddenly the morning silence was interrupted by the crow's caw. A minute later the bird landed on the window and Nostra untied the scroll that was attached to its feet.
Nostra opened the scroll and quickly read what's written in it. Thei facial expression changed just as quickly, which made Dragon Tamer and Steal worry. Then the occult doctor looked at them and said:
"Lady Hilda will be the new grandmaster. Lord Patrick has been killed by the Nether King".
Stella gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. The tears started appearing in her eyes.
"How could this happen?" — she said, and her voice was shaking, — First Azura, and now... Poor Lord Patrick, he was such a good grandmaster..."
Rain looked to the ground. He tried to make his thoughts calm down and didn't say a word, because he felt like he was going to cry. He managed to get his feeling under control and only said "I see". He didn't know what else to say. So he just started into the open window. He looked at the sun, rising in the east on the colorful sky.
He would be wrong if he said he didn't care about Lord Patrick. He was his mentor and the first father figure he had ever had in his life. He was often so irritated and a little scary, but he was a very kind and caring person on the inside. Rain knew that the grandmaster saw himself in him, they had similar backstories and similar personalities. Lord Patrick even adopted him. Both of them saw each other as father and son, but they would never say it to one another. They both wanted to get closer with each other, but they never could.
Dragon Tamer remembered all the moments he spent with his mentor.
When he carried his zombified body in his arms. That was the first time the two met. Lord Patrick gave life to Rain that day. In fact he did much more than that.
He remembered how the trained together, when Ser Patrick would often yell at him, how he said "I have nothing more to teach you" and smiled, that was the only time Rain saw him genuinely happy.
He remembered how they signed the adoption papers and everyone was confused.
Or when the general became the Grandmaster. Did Rain ever congratulate him on that? Probably not, not before he went to the Nether to slay the Nether Princess.
When he wasn't mad at Dragon Tamer when Azura brought him back to the Frostborn castle. He didn't scold him for his recklessness, in fact it was the opposite, he was very understanding... For the first few days at least.
When they argued before he and Stella left to the Coven to purge his curse. Looking back, Ser Patrick was just worried, but at the time it seemed like he thought that Rain was too weak for such a journey.
When Dragon Tamer wanted to brag about his new sword and obtaining new abilities when he came back, but the Grandmaster was too busy so they didn't have much time to talk about anything.
But they did eventually exchange a few words before Rain left again.
"Good luck, Dragon Tamer. Be careful."
"You too, sire".
And they never saw each other again.
But they were glad to have each other in their lives.
Even if it wasn't for long. After all, life is short, isn't it?
The end.
