The Morning After The first light of dawn filtered through the narrow window of Mattheo's room, casting long, slanted shadows across the floor.
I lay awake in Lorenzo's bed, my mind a tangled mess of confusion and guilt. The events of the previous night played over and over in my mind—the feel of Mattheo's lips on mine, the fire that had ignited between us, and the cold emptiness that followed when he pulled away.
I knew I couldn't stay here any longer. The weight of what had happened was too heavy, and the tension between us too thick to bear.
Careful not to make a sound, I slid out from under the covers, my feet hitting the cool floor with a soft thud. I glanced over at Mattheo, who was still sprawled across his bed, his face relaxed in sleep, the usual sharpness in his expression softened by the early morning light.
For a moment, I hesitated. There was something undeniably magnetic about him, something that pulled at me even now, making me want to stay despite the confusion. But I knew better. I needed to leave. Quietly, I gathered my clothes, slipping into them as quickly as possible.
I could still feel the ghost of his touch on my skin, a shiver running down my spine as I thought about how close we had been. I bit my lip, trying to push the thoughts away. This wasn't the time to dwell on it.
I needed to get out before he woke up and complicated things even further. As I reached for the door, I heard Mattheo stir. My heart skipped a beat, and I froze, hoping he would stay asleep.
But when I turned around, his eyes were open, watching me with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat.
"Leaving so soon?" he murmured, his voice still husky with sleep.
"I... I need to go," I whispered back, trying to keep my voice steady. "Pansy and I... we need to talk."
He smirked, the corner of his mouth curling up in that infuriatingly confident way of his. "Running away, are we?"
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to meet his gaze. "I'm not running away. I just have things to sort out." He pushed himself up on his elbows, his eyes never leaving mine. "Sure you do. But remember, Adeleine, you know where to find me if you change your mind."
I didn't trust myself to say anything more, so I simply nodded and slipped out the door, the click of it closing behind me feeling far too final.
As I made my way back to the common room, my thoughts drifted to Pansy. I wasn't ready to face her, not after everything that had happened, but I knew I couldn't avoid her forever. The tension between us had been building for hours, ever since Cedric and I had that awkward conversation during dance practice.
She had been right about one thing—I had been playing with Cedric's feelings, even if I hadn't meant to. But the way she had kicked me out of our room still stung.

When I reached the door to our dormitory, I hesitated. I could hear Pansy inside, her voice low and tense. My heart sank. I wasn't ready for another confrontation, especially not after the morning I had just had. But I had to face this, so I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
