*set during as good as dead
The rain was pouring heavy on her window, causing her mind wander. The words DT, DT, DT, burning in her brain as she continued to think about who was watching her. Maybe they were outside of her window right now...
She sat up, running her hands through her hair and sighing. This was no way to live. What happened to the innocent, sweet, good girl she was a few months ago? The girl who just wanted to find the truth?
Now, she had to remind herself that there wasn't blood on her hands anymore, just sweat. And there isn't a gun going off when doors slam or pens clicked. And the chalk drawing, the pigeons, it might just be a prank. Or something more sinister...
Pip never thought in a thousand years that she would need pills to sleep. But yet again, she also never thought she would witness a murder and have a stalker, but all's well that ends well, right? Lightning roared outside, causing Pip to jump, and she had to remind herself that it was just the storm outside, not the gun. Sighing again, she peeled off her comforter and sat at the edge of her bed, questions causing her to spin like a dog chasing it's tail.
Then she thought of Barney.
Barney, her innocent pupper, her favorite, gone. Because of her... Her parents and Ravi told her countless times that it wasn't her fault. And in a way, it wasn't. He wandered off, disappeared, and Becca caught up to him. No questions asked. But Pip knew there would always be something inside her that told her differently.
Another lightning strike, Pip could feel herself getting shaky. She tried to take a breath, wiping the sweat-not blood- from her hands. She knew she was exhausted, and if she was ever going to figure out who this stalker was, she would need to be in the right state of mind. But she couldn't do it. Slowly, she glanced around her room, which was covered in paper clips and pictures, some still remaining from Jamie Reynold's case from just a month or so.
She had her recording equipment set up on her dresser, which once as covered with picture frames of her friends and little trinkets she collected over the years. She actually didn't remember what she did with any of those things now. Where she placed them last, and if they even held the same significance anymore.
Pip knew she needed sleep. But it didn't feel like she was going to get it anytime soon.
She jumped again when she heard her phone vibrate on her bedside table. Pip was getting more paranoid by the day. With the comments on her podcast, random phone calls from strangers, and the words who will look for you when you disappear echoing in her mind just as much as DT did. If her parents ever heard her thoughts, they'd probably think she was crazy.
And maybe she was going crazy...
Slowly, she leaned over to her bedside table, picking her phone. She recently got a new case; a clear one with a Polaroid picture of her and Ravi on it, with Ravi's slanted handwriting saying my sarge <3 on it, and an agggtm podcast sticker. Pip smiled, turning on her phone and reading the icon showing Ravi's name on it and words, 'can't sleep?'
How he knew, she had no idea.
She quickly opened her messaging app, typing the words, 'No.' on the screen and laying back down on her back, taking a deep breath. Ravi didn't know about the Xanax, but he knew something was wrong. He asked her about how her sleep was a few days ago after the whole 'Dead Girl Walking' and the creepy chalk pictures appeared near her house after their run-in with Lauren and Ant. And ever since, he's been asking about it.
Pip knew Ravi was wanting to help, and the last thing she wanted was for him to be more worried than he already was. Ravi insisted on checking in with her at least every few hours, making sure she was okay and not going stir crazy. And even though a part of her loved it, she also didn't want him to be distracted.
The law firm Ravi started interning at was strict, and the last thing Pip wanted was for him to be fired because he was too distracted on her whole 'situation'. But every time she mentioned it, he always said she was more important.
Which always made her heart flutter.
Her phone went off again, this time the text showing, 'i'm coming over, be there in a few.' Pip placed her phone on her bed, feeling her heart race a little bit. He had only ever 'snuck in' one other time after Barney died, in the hopes of keeping her safe while a killer was out on the loose (and they weren't even together then).
Part of her knew that she'd sleep better with him there, though she wasn't sure if she would tell him that to boost his ego. Pip quickly got to her door, twisting the handle and opening it as softly as possible, before making her way downstairs. Her parents would be asleep-they were two of the deepest sleepers she had ever met- and if Josh heard, she knew he wouldn't say anything. He was a pretty awesome little brother in that way.
As she made it to the front door, she could see the dim headlights of Ravi's car through the rain. She couldn't help the giddy feeling inside of her as she waited for him. As Ravi got closer, she unlocked and opened the door, waving him inside. "Hey," she whispered, laughing as he shook out the wetness from his hair, water on her.
"Hey, Sarge. Reporting for boyfriend duties," he mock-saluted her, and she couldn't help but smile. "You doing alright?"
Pip nodded, a silent 'yeah' escaping from her lips as she yawned. Ravi smiled, reaching over to place an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to his chest as the two began to walk back up the stairs. Pip leaned into him, feeling an instant warmth that she could barely describe and that he had no right to be radiating.
Once they got back to her room, Ravi closed the door silently, Pip plopping on her bed and rubbing her eyes. "Awe, look! My little Pip, so sleepy." he laughed as he took off his jacket and shoes, before sitting down next to her. Pip gave him a half-hearted smile, feeling tiredness overwhelm her.
"I'm tired." She muttered, leaning on his shoulder.
Ravi had the nerve to laugh at her. "I can tell." he gave her a whisper of a kiss on her forehead. "Let's go to sleep." Ravi grabbed her hands, leading her to her pillows and climbing in next to her. He pulled her close to his chest, holding her tightly and resting his chin on the top of her head like he did when they hugged.
Pip instantly felt another wave of tiredness, her eyes getting heavy as she cuddled into his side, laying her head on his chest and grabbed his hand. Good, she thought, they still fit. Lightning went off again, but this time, it was just lightning. The gun was fading into the back of her mind, and she found herself relaxing for the first time all night.
"I love you, Sarge." Ravi whispered, squeezing her hand. "I'll protect you, always."
Pip felt herself smile, reaching for his elbow and squeezing it, one of their silent 'I love you's'. She would've actually said it, of course, but words seemed to disappear as for the first time in months, she was finally able to sleep.
