(past / flashback)

Harry's mom looked over at her son with a gentle smile, noticing the intense concentration on his face as he played a board game with his friend Zayn. "Harry," she began, her voice filled with a hint of curiosity and affection, "are you ready to wrap up and head home yet?" The warmth of the room was accentuated by the soft glow of the lampshade above them, casting a comforting light over the game pieces scattered across the wooden table.

"Can we just have five more minutes, mom?" he asked, his voice quivering with hope, his eyes never leaving the board as his small hands clutched the dice tightly.

"You've been playing for a while now. You told me half an hour ago that you only needed five more minutes." The sound of her giggle filled the room, mingling with the occasional clink of the pieces being moved and the murmur of their conversation.

Harry looked up at her, his expression a mix of surprise and a touch of sheepishness. "But I didn't realize it was that long. Can't I stay here overnight?"

"Remember that you both have a big day tomorrow. You're starting at your new school, and we need to make sure you're well-rested," she said, her voice taking on a more serious tone.

Harry and Zayn were best friends since they can remember. They live in the same neighbourhood, went to the same kindergarten, and tomorrow marked their first day at elementary school. Harry was convinced that finding a stronger friendship than theirs is practically impossible.

"Okay," Harry nodded slowly. He knew his mom was right, and he didn't want to start his first day at school feeling tired.

Before they left Zayn's house, Zayn gave harry and a last goodbye hug. "I'll see you tomorrow," he assured him.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Before long, it was already the next day and if harry was being honest, he was not excited. Mostly scared and didn't know what to expect. New people, place, stuff to get used to. All these things were pretty frightening for a boy like him. But he was glad Zayn was going to be there with him, so he wouldn't have to be alone.

After Harry's mom dropped him off and led him into his new classroom, his new teacher immediately greeted him. "Hello there, you must be Harry."

He nervously nodded as in answer.

"It's a pleasure meeting you, young man. I heard Zayn is your friend?" she looks around looking for Zayn who was already seated. " It seems like he's already talking to somebody. How about you go sit next to Niall?" she then pointed at a blonde-haired boy who's sitting alone, only a few rows away. "You see that blonde boy over there? That's Niall. I'm sure you two will be great friends."

And so, Harry went to sit next to Niall.

"Hi! I'm Niall. What's your name?" the boy starts asking right away.

"I'm Harry."

"Wanna be friends? I could help you around if you want, so you won't be here by yourself."

"Yeah," Harry smiles. "I would like that."

When school was almost over and Harry still didn't get the chance to talk with Zayn, he felt a wave of panic rushing through him.

Although Harry's new friend Niall introduced him to another boy, named Liam. Niall assured him he's nice and it turned out he wasn't lying. Harry and Liam did get along very quickly.

The boy was glad he had already found himself some friends, but Zayn was his best friend, of course he wanted to spend some time with him.

After a few more minutes, he eventually decided to go over to him. Maybe the kid he's talking to will be fun too, Harry thought to himself.

"Zay-"

"Can't you see we are talking?" Harry didn't even have the chance to finish his sentence, because Zayn's new friend whose name was Ennis, immediately interrupted him.

Zayn did notice the way he acted towards Harry, and he wasn't so happy about it. "don't talk to him like-"

"Just get lost." apparently, the Ennis guy didn't care about what Zayn had to say either.

As days went by, Zayn found a few more friends. But there were all the same. Zayn didn't want to leave their friend group, or at least that's what he's been telling himself. He did want to leave, he was just afraid. Scared of what would happen, what would they think or do to him. At first, they all seemed friendly, but after some time, when Zayn noticed how they were acting towards other people, he wanted to spend time Harry again and maybe get to know Niall or Liam, and for a while, it seemed like things could change.

When they were on a school trip, waiting in front of their school for a few more people to arrive, Zayn's friends weren't there yet, so he got the opportunity to talk to harry.

Things seemed to go really well, and Harry even introduced him to Liam and Niall, just as Zayn hoped for. They all enjoyed the conversation. It was as if they all knew each other for eternity, and Zayn wanted to be in their friend group, he really did. He wished he wouldn't have started talking to the other lads in the first place. He was constantly afraid of what would they do if they found out he's talking to these three. Not to mention that he likes talking to them.

When Zayn's 'friends' arrived and noticed them talking together, they immediately went over to them. Without saying anything, they dragged Zayn to the side. "You're talking to them? Ew. Get away from those brats for god's sake," their voice was full of disrespect.

It only got worse. For both Zayn and Harry.

Harry was on the toilet during break time when Ennis asked Zayn about this bunny keychain Harry had hung on his school bag. Zayn explained to him that Harry got it from his grandma for his 4th birthday. She passed away not even a year later and for Harry, it's something he wants to keep forever. That for him, it wouldn't matter if he's 6 or 21, he still wants to keep it and hopes he'll never lose it.

But Ennis decided to make this little wish of his a little more complicated. Just as Zayn finished explaining, Ennis stood up and removed the keychain from Harry's bag.

"What are you doing? Give it back to him!" Zayn tried to argue and attempted to grab the keychain from his hand.

"Relax, he won't even notice." Ennis rolled his eyes and put the keychain inside his own school bag. "It's dirty as hell anyway."

But Harry did notice. He noticed it the second he came back from the toilet. He looked for it everywhere, and both his friends helped him, but they never found it. Eventually the green-eyed boy ended up with a tear falling down his face. Of course, Ennis made a stupid joke about him being a cry baby and made the whole classroom laugh at him.

Little did Ennis know, when he wasn't looking, Zayn pulled out the keychain from his bag and hid it in his own.

When it came to lunch time, harry walked away from Zayn's table with a smile, because the younger boy forgot his lunchbox at home and Zayn offered him one of his two sandwiches.

"Why'd you do that for?" Ennis asked Zayn right after.

"So, he won't be hungry?"

"Next time he bothers you, you should just hit him and make him go away."

"I don't wanna hit him," Zayn mumbled under his breath.

"Don't be a loser. he's not homeless, is he? He can get himself food without bothering everyone."

"Don't call me that," sometimes Zayn wondered why were his 'friends' acting like this, but he knew he couldn't do a thing about it. Maybe he could, but he was too scared to do anything. "But okay."

The next time Harry came up to him, Zayn didn't do as he was told. He couldn't bring himself to do it. So instead, they hit Zayn.
