Years had passed since the death of Claire's notorious hero uncle, Translucent, a figure known for his immense power and unyielding presence. Deciding it was time to forge her own path, Claire enrolled at Godolkin University for Supes, a prestigious institution where she hoped to redefine herself. There, she quickly befriended many, including Luke Riordan, who was renowned as the top-ranked student at the school. Surprisingly, Claire's closest friend in this new circle was Cate, Luke's girlfriend, and her roommate. Their bond grew strong over their shared experiences and proximity.
On the second day of their junior year, the entire friend group reconvened at the university. Excitement buzzed in the air as they planned a night out. This time, Andre, one of their friends, had invited a new girl none of them had met before. As they waited, the anticipation built. Eventually, the new arrival appeared, and Andre introduced her with a proud grin.
"I told you! This is Marie, the one I was telling y'all about," Andre announced.
Luke, ever the gentleman, extended his hand to Marie. "Hi, I'm Luke. And this is Cate," he said, gesturing to the girl beside him. Cate smiled warmly, her presence radiating a casual friendliness.
Marie's smile was bright and eager. "I know who you are. I know every... nice to meet you," she said, her excitement evident.
Jordan, another member of the group, was next in line for introductions. Andre pointed at him. "That's Jordan."
Marie's expression shifted slightly. Her smile faded as she regarded Jordan. "You gonna reject me from this outing, too?" she asked with a hint of sharpness.
Jordan responded quickly, "I'd love to."
Andre intervened with a chuckle. "No. Play nice, or I won't share my drugs with you," he warned, walking over to Jordan, who laughed at the jest.
Marie turned her attention to Claire, who had been watching the exchange. With a friendly demeanor, Claire introduced herself. "I'm Claire! The best one here," she said with a grin, hugging Marie instead of shaking her hand. Marie seemed momentarily taken aback by the warm gesture but returned the hug, feeling more at ease.
As the group made their way to Andre's car, the night's adventures began. They headed to the back of the Seven Tower, where Marie climbed a small tower to take in the cityscape. Luke followed her, hoping to engage in conversation. Meanwhile, the others indulged in their chosen substances, leaving Claire as the sole sober observer, uninterested in the drugs.
"She's going to steal your man." Claire joked to Cate as she watched Luke and Marie.
Cate, ever playful, replied. "Please, Claire," Cate teased, rolling her eyes. "Luke knows who the real catch is." She flashed a teasing smile, her tone light but with a subtle edge of possessiveness.
When Luke and Marie returned from their conversation, it was time to head inside. The group approached the entrance, where a doorman greeted them.
"Good evening. Reservation under?" the man inquired.
Cate, nonchalant as ever, began to remove one of her gloves. "We don't have one," she said, placing her hand gently on the man's. "But you don't give a fuck," she continued with a charming smile.
The doorman, seemingly influenced by Cate's touch telepathy, smiled back and replied, "I do not give a fuck." He then led them to a booth where they all settled in. Cate and Luke sat together, as usual, while Claire chose to sit next to Marie, eager to learn more about her. "Sooo. What's your powers?" Claire asked as she stared at Marie.
Marie, feeling the weight of Claire's focused attention, hesitated. She wasn't accustomed to such straightforward curiosity, especially about her powers. Looking around, she noticed that everyone else appeared comfortable, which only added to her anxiety.
