Leo's heart pounded in his chest as he stared at the bottle of wine, identical to the one he had just uncorked. The sticky note with the smiley face seemed to mock him, its crude lines now accompanied by a chilling message:

"I'm closer than you think."

His breath caught in his throat as he read the words, a rush of fear and adrenaline washing over him. This was no longer just a prank or his mind playing tricks on him-someone was inside his house. Someone who knew every detail of his life, someone who had slipped past his defenses and was now toying with him.

He grabbed the note, his hand trembling slightly as he crushed it into his palm. His eyes darted around the kitchen, scanning for any sign of an intruder, but the room was empty, eerily still except for the faint breeze that rustled the curtains by the open window. His first instinct was to call the police, but something stopped him. Whoever this was, they wanted him to panic, to feel helpless. He wasn't going to give them that satisfaction.

But he couldn't ignore the threat, either. Leo reached for his phone, intending to check the security footage from his home's cameras. His fingers fumbled as he navigated to the app, the screen lighting up as the cameras came online. But what he saw made his blood run cold.

All of the footage from the past hour had been wiped clean. Every camera showed a smooth, unbroken feed-until the moment he had entered the house. The intruder had known exactly what they were doing, covering their tracks so precisely that it was almost as if they had never been there at all.

Except for the note. The notes, he corrected himself, remembering the one he had found earlier.

He replayed the last few hours in his mind, searching for any detail that might explain what was happening. Had someone followed him home? Had they been watching him all day, waiting for the perfect moment to strike? And why now, after the biggest success of his career, was someone so intent on getting inside his head?

His thoughts were interrupted by the soft creak of a floorboard behind him. Leo spun around, his body tense, but the kitchen was still empty. He was alone-or so it seemed. The house, usually his sanctuary, now felt like a maze of shadows, each corner hiding unseen threats.

He couldn't stay here. Not tonight. The unease gnawing at him was too strong, the sense of danger too real. Leo grabbed his car keys from the counter, his mind racing as he tried to decide where to go. A hotel? A friend's place? Anywhere but here.

As he turned to leave, a low, almost imperceptible hum filled the air, emanating from his phone. He glanced down at the screen, the brightness revealing an incoming message from an unknown number.

He hesitated for a moment before opening it. The message contained only three words:

"Run, Leo, run."

Panic surged through him as he bolted out of the kitchen, leaving the bottle of wine and the unsettling notes behind. He had no plan, no clear destination-only the overwhelming need to escape. His footsteps echoed through the empty house as he reached the front door, fumbling with the lock in his haste to get outside.

As the door swung open, he froze.

Standing in the middle of his driveway, illuminated by the dim glow of the streetlights, was a figure dressed in black, their face obscured by a hood. They stood perfectly still, as if waiting for him.

Leo's breath caught in his throat. The figure slowly lifted their hand, revealing a small piece of paper held between two fingers. Even from a distance, Leo could make out the familiar smiley face scrawled across it.

Then, in one fluid motion, the figure let the paper slip from their grasp, allowing it to flutter to the ground before turning and vanishing into the night.

Leo didn't move. He couldn't. His mind raced with questions, but there were no answers, only the realization that whoever this was, they were far from finished with him. And this was just the beginning.
