Marianne's POV:

"I heard he got suspended."

"Wait, did he?? That's all they did after he did that to Jamison's face??"

"Wow, I can't believe that..."

"I can. The guy's a total psycho and probably threatened the principal for this."

"Oh!! And you wanna know what else?? I heard the fight was about the new girl."

"Was it really??"

"That's what I heard too!!! That's what everyone's saying it was about."

"Yeah. I bet Larissa threw a fit. We all know that she's, like, delusional when it comes to Sawyer."

There's a moment of silence following that before the girl spouts nervously, "But, like, don't tell her I said that, though. I'm looking forward to going to her graduation party this year."

"My lips are sealed, aha!!"

"What's the new girl's name anyway?? Isn't it, like, Maria, or Mary, or something? Maria Parkens or some shit??"

I stiffen in my seat at the mention of my name.

Well, kind of my name...

...close enough...

I glance up from my computer to see my classmates sitting in front of me chit-chatting about the fight between Sawyer and Jamison.

And me, I guess.

Well, this is a new development to the situation...

Suddenly, they all glance over their shoulders in my direction, and I jump. I look back at my computer and clear my throat quietly, pretending to have not been eavesdropping on their conversation.

My heart races a bit at all of the attention on me, and I tug at my shirt collar.

Welp...

This is unfortunate...

A 'Series of Unfortunate Events' some would even say...

I remain completely still, feeling their eyes staring straight at me. I pretend to be studying my computer screen intensely. Like I'm reading something really good when in actuality, I'm just staring at my mouse as I draw circles with it.

After a few lingering moments, I find some courage to glance up again, only to find that they are still staring at me. Immediately, I look back down at my computer, my anxiety suddenly shooting through the roof.
