"You weren't joking!" Akari gasped, staring at the massive Pokemon in front of them. The Drifloon floated lazily above the shore, blinking quizzically at them but seemingly unbothered.
"I've never seen one that big that wasn't an alpha," she said, staring at the Pokemon with wide eyes. "And at Prelude Beach of all places!"
"I know," Rei said, a grin on his face, pleased to have found a Pokemon Akari hadn't seen. "I'm going to try to catch it! Unless you want it," he added goodnaturedly.
Akari smiled at her friend. "No you found it, you should definitely try to catch it!"
Rei grinned at her. "I just wanted you to see it first so you know I wasn't joking if it escaped!"
He moved forward, pokeball in hand, before throwing it at the Drifloon with an impressive swing. The Pokemon disappeared in a flash of light as the ball twitched. The trio held their breath, before the Drifloon burst out of the ball, enraged.
"Shit," Rei said. He yanked his Pikachu's ball off of his belt and hurled it at the angry Drifloon.
"Pikachu, use Thundershock!" he yelled. Akari watched her friend proudly as he brought the Pokémon's health low enough to throw a jet ball and it and watch it release a puff of steam, signifying a successful catch.
"Awesome job, Rei!" she cheered happily. She gave him an affectionate punch on the shoulder as he stared at the pokeball with a wide grin on his face. "I can't believe you caught it so easily!"
"Thanks!" he said with a laugh, punching his friend back. Akari smiled in response, turning to Volo, who was standing at a distance from them.
"Wasn't that cool, Volo?"
"Very cool," he said, giving her a weary smile. Akari gave him a puzzled look, curious as to his distance. Before she could respond, however, Rei was beside her, tucking his new Drifloon's pokeball into his pocket.
"Hey I still owe you that mochi," Rei said with a smile. "Do you guys want to join Wanda and I for dinner? We were going to meet at Beni's at sunset,"
Akari turned to Volo, who shifted uncomfortably. "I don't know if that would be the best idea,"
Rei looked at him nervously, before turning to Akari, obviously hoping she would have an explanation ready. When she failed to reply, Rei shrugged.
"If you guys decide you want to, I'll ask Beni to give us a table with extra seats,"
Akari smiled warmly at her friend. "Thank you, Rei!"
Rei nodded, shooting a quick glance between the two, before dashing off. "I'll see you there then! Or if not, tomorrow when we start our survey!" he called.
Akari grinned at him, waving a temporary goodbye as the boy vanished behind the dunes. She then turned to Volo, who had not moved.
"I'm not much one for crowds," he admitted sheepishly, looking down with an expression akin to bashfulness.
"Rei and Wanda are hardly a crowd," she said, but she gave him a forgiving smile. "We don't have to go, if you don't want to,"
Volo hesitated, and she could see the cogs turning in his head.
"I'd like to...," he said slowly. "But I don't want to make them uncomfortable,"
"If Rei's inviting you I'm sure he's not uncomfortable. He wears his heart on his sleeve, you would know if he was. And Wanda is sweet, she won't worry if I vouch for you, and I'm sure Rei has filled her in already,"
"Are they together then?" Volo asked curiously. "I don't seem to remember ever meeting a Wanda in the Survey Corps,"
"She's in the Security Corps," Akari said. "But it's likely you've never met her, she gets lost a lot on her missions so she's rarely at Jubilife or any of the camps. I used to have to rescue her all the time," she laughed. "I think Rei enjoys being her savior though, and she's very impressed with his Pikachu's training. They're very cute together," she said fondly.
