"Stop moving, I have a hot thing attached to your hair. Do you want to be cooked?"
Josie says as she is attempting to put some sort of wave in my hair.
She picked my outfit. We are going to a bonfire at the beach so nothing too over the top. I am wearing a pair of black jeans with a few rips on the legs and a random band tee that I had found in the laundry. I think it was my dad's. I have no idea who The Ravens are, but it looks cool. I bring a sweater as well. I shove everything I think I will need into a small backpack, just in case.
Sweater. Keys. Phone. A bottle of fireball?
I give Josie a look. She puts her index finger over her lips to shush me, mouthes the word "Dad" and points to the kitchen. I roll my eyes and push it to the bottom of the bag.
"You girls almost ready?"
Oliver exclaims from the kitchen. He walks around the corner, holding a cup of Hot chocolate.
"Yes, all ready."
Josie says giving him a side hug. I do the same.
"If you need me to come get you, please call. Love you"
He whispers before I pull away.
I nod and throw my bag over my shoulders. I hear a horn from outside. Right on time, it is Presley. I open the front door and walk out. The sun is just starting to set, the clouds look like cotton candy. Fluffy with a light pink tinge.
Presley jumps out of her Blue SUV and runs into me screaming.
"HI MY GIRL!!"
she embraces me with a hug, it is very heartwarming.
We get into her vehicle and drive to the beach, it is around a twenty minute drive, so if anything does happen, my father can get here in no time. Josie is fixing her lipstick in the backseat and Presley is shuffling through her phone to find a song she likes.
" I missed you so much!"
she says putting her phone down.
"I missed you too."
She looks at me offended.
"Seriously? We have not seen each other all summer and that's it?"
I sigh and say a little quieter.
"Well, this summer is not exactly how I expected it to go. You at least have your boyfriend still."
Presley's boyfriend was okay. Don't get me wrong, he treated her mediocre and she seemed happy. I kind of envied her for that now. I wanted to be happy. Her boyfriend was in college for computer engineering. Big nerd, but he was like a lost puppy, that or because Presley was very demanding. He followed her around and expected to give her attention all the time. His name is Jessie. I think his last name is Somers? I never really asked a lot about him because after last summer when he came to visit, I could barely stand the guy. He likes to talk and clearly no one in his life has ever told him to shut the fuck up. He acts like he knows every. damn. thing. Intelligence is power, but if you flaunt it enough to the point of ignorance. It just makes you look stupid.
Presley scoffs and looks at me with a hurt look.
"Look Jac, I get your boyfriend died. It is all I have heard about for the last week and a bit. My heart hurts for you, it truly does. It is not my fault or yours or Josie's as to why he died. You are so negative lately, and you have not called or texted me back. I have called you about eighteen times to check up on you. I am trying."
