"And he spoke to you?"

"He said my name. He said, 'Your mother for the Cup',"

Alec and Nyla had entered the room partway through a conversation, that much was clear as they stood in the doorway.

"Who said that?" Alec questioned.

Jace and Clary spun around and spoke at the same time.

"Valentine."

"He's with my mother," Clary added.

"And he can speak to you through that necklace?" Alec questioned. "Here, in the Institute?"

"It's like when I saw Dot," Clary explained honestly.

Jace looked deeply at the necklace, trying to work out what it was but Nyla had already beaten him to it. She was good at knowing her artefacts, everyone knew that.

"It's a Portal shard," Nyla spoke up. "That's why your mother made sure you had it."

"All I know is what I saw... My mother's alive. She's unconscious, but alive," said Clary hopefully.

"Where are they?" asked Alec.

"I don't know."

"But you said you saw them. Were there any identifying characteristics? Equipment, weapons, photographs?" Alec pressed.

"I don't remember," Clary denied. "It was awful."

"Alec, lighten up," Jace insisted.

"I'm trying to get something we can use out of this," Alec argued, turning to Clary. "Clary, what did you see, exactly?"

Nyla couldn't blame him for trying to find out whatever they could. They were at a dead end and with nothing to go off, this one piece of information could help them with everything. Besides, there was no use keeping information to one person, they had to work together.

"Valentine has my mother! That's what I saw!"

"Clary, you need to calm down and get a hold of your emotions," Nyla insisted. "I know you're not taught to hold them in like us—"

"And how is that working out for ya?" Clary emphasises harshly.

"Clary, it's up to us to protect this institute and no matter whether you are my family or not, I'm not going to let you walk over me," Nyla replied just as harshly. "If Valentine can see in, that's a door we have to shut."
