I had fully expected to be buried alive.
If I had known that slapping bombshell Ainsley would have zero consequences, I would have done that countless times before.
The worst I received was a "cunt" thrown my way when I entered the cafeteria, the long oak tables screaming "richer than the one at your house" and the cliche groups sitting at separate tables, putting a hand on their chair when I looked their way.
Kira soon followed me to a table at a corner, for two, overlooking the window.
"I'm sorry I said that out loud," I clutched my hands tight, playing with the bracelet my father had given me twelve years back.
Kira placed her hand on mine, a warm smile on her face. "It's okay, you were looking out for me."
"Besides Kai had that coming a long time," she rolled her eyes and drank her coconut milk, her eyes eyeing the pizza on my tray.
I pushed my tray towards her. "Take it. I think I have a bad stomach."
Kira had this obsessive diet thing going on. She watched what she ate, threw up purposely when she felt bloated and spent hours looking at her in the mirror.
I was sure she would decline, like the million times she did when I offered her my food.
But she grabbed the pizza and took a huge bite. A smile came up to my face automatically.
Atta girl.
"No 'dieting to look good for Caspian' anymore?" She had hit me with that excuse whenever I asked her why she was on such a strict diet. She had just shrugged, her smile smaller than it was before.
I knew she had E.D.
And I also knew she'd tell me when she was ready to talk about it.
"Nah, today is my cheat day. And have you seen this pizza slice? I would kill to have this everyday. Your father is such a great cook."
I was too poor to afford school lunch which apparently costed more than our apartment, if that was even possible.
So my father got up everyday to cook up something for me.
"That reminds me, when will I meet him? He literally has the "best father award" bagged," her eyes twinkled while my breath caught up in my throat.
She couldn't meet my father, ever.
I couldn't do that to her.
"One day definitely. That reminds me, how did your hacking slash coding competition go?" Even if Kira was surprised by the way I changed the topic, she did not show it.
"Great actually. Too bad I did not win. But it's all for the experience." She munched on the pizza heartily.
Kira was a hacker. Like a total black hoodie-dark room-hood up-solitude hacker.
