Five boxes of various pregnancy tests aligned their bathroom countertop. Digital versions and the handy old school ones that required them to wait a little longer. They stared at all of them like they were contestants on a game show. Which test would prove to be the one to tell them the life changing news?
"I don't think it matters which one I do, right? I don't think I have enough pee for all five of them," Olivia admitted, picking the box closest to the toilet.
"Maybe do two so we can be sure," Spencer offered, making his choice and putting the rest of the tests back into the grocery bag. Right after his training camp practice, they found themselves at the grocery store buying pregnancy tests after Olivia's discovery. Oddly enough, they weren't in a panic. Olivia wasn't sure if it was the security of being out of their teens and married or if they were truly ready for this mentally and emotionally. Earlier that day, her nerves were a bit rattled because this wasn't in their short-term plans but after she settled and talked to Spencer she felt more at ease.
Spencer wasn't in a panic necessarily because he knew they were in a position to care for a child financially. More of his emotion was geared towards being shocked and the fact that they were possibly being catapulted into parenthood within the next few months.
Olivia's eyes beamed up at him as she opened one of the boxes and removed the small white stick. Giving her privacy, Spencer stepped outside into the bedroom and sat on the edge of their bed. A short time later, Olivia stepped outside with her phone and joined her husband.
"Two minutes," Olivia replied, tapping her screen to see how much time they had left to find out if they should start prepping their second bedroom for a child. "We should start thinking about names."
"We don't even know if you're pregnant, yet," Spencer laughed, watching the time dwindle down on Olivia's phone . "Okay, do we go with a name that begins with S or O?"
"What good names begin with O outside of Olivia," she pondered, quickly searching up 'O' baby names. "Okay, maybe I lied. We have a good list going."
"I think Spencer works for a girl or boy if I'm being honest," Spencer added, lacing his fingers between hers. "What?"
"Were you a Pretty Little Liars fan and I just didn't know this information," Olivia questioned, leaning back in shock before her timer hit zero and jolted them both.
"Pretty what," he mumbled, but Olivia was already taking off to the bathroom. Time seemed to slow when he got up to follow her to either their life changing news or a false alarm. There was a calmness in the air when Olivia turned around with their life in her hands. Her expression was blank for a half of a second as they made eye contact. "It's positive," she acknowledged, turning the test towards her husband so he could see the double lines in the small window. "Oh my God, it's positive."
The new reality that didn't seem that scary a mere two minutes ago, suddenly felt like a weight on their chests, "It's positive," Spencer muttered, staring at the test as if he could see right into his future through the tiny window.
As they laid in bed that night, the newness of their next chapter had not worn off, leaving them both awake. Olivia's hand resting on her stomach as she thought about the growing life inside of her. Spencer stared up at the ceiling, hoping sleep found him for a few hours before he was up again and heading to another day of camp.
"When should we tell everyone," Olivia asked, not expecting Spencer to answer but the silence was deafening.
"Whenever you want to, baby," he replied, turning his head slightly to see Olivia aimlessly massaging the top of her flat stomach. "You know we're going to be good, right?"
