It was a cold evening in Seven Fountain. A silhouette of a woman with a suitcase in hand, struggling against the wind. Her figure looking eerie against the foggy dusky forest background. She tightens her red coat around her body. Her black long hair creates whimsical wisps from underneath her black hat, almost like Octopus tendrils.
Her pace starts to increase as her long boots scurries along the road. Streetlamps lightning her way and brightening up the colourful shops and restaurants. It still amazes her how quaint this little town is, with all its long-forgotten architecture almost looking like a Swiss town in the Alpes.
Melodic sounds of Christmas music fill the air, and she smiles with each step she takes.
Beautiful fairy lights twined around trees and shop fronts creates a pleasant, homely feel, she is home! Her aquamarine eyes sparkle with the twinkling lights.
The aromatic smells of Chelsea buns and coffee attacks her senses, as she rounds the corner: "Just the thing I need on a night like this!"
She looks up to the old-world sign dangling in the wind 'Martha's Brew'. Her mom's famous coffee shop. She wonders if she will be glad for the surprise visit. Simoné De la Rey has not seen her mom in over 5 years, and she certainly is not expecting her.
She pouts her red lips and blows out a nervous breath. She straightens her back, puts her chin up and plasters on her dazzling smile. "You don't need to be nervous; mom will be delighted when she hears you moving back", her wolf Shaney says, enforcing some confidence within Simoné.
With a swift motion she grabs the door handle before she can run in the opposite direction. The door opens and as she steps in, the bell announces her arrival, ringing through the shop like a celebrity being announced. All the customers looking her way. Simoné has never been fond of attention, but steels herself with a friendly smile. Many occupants recognizes her and wave and smile.
Cozy round tables with festive checkered tablecloths and Christmas wreaths as tables decor greets her. The aroma of baked goods warming her up.
She heads straight to the wooden counter where a smiling blonde girl greets her. "Welcome to Martha's Brew, would you like to take a seat or are you Taking Away?", she says. Her elf like uniform displays her name on her shoulder.
"She's new", Shaney states. Simoné smiles. "Can you tell me if Martha is here? I have come to see her, Cindy."
Cindy smiles and points her finger to the kitchen. "She's baking up a storm in there, can I call her for you?"
"Please do", Simoné replies and takes off her hat and shoves it in her coat pocket.
Cindy disappears through the kitchen doors. And laughter and talks start back up.
She looks around the place, Mom has really done well in the shop. There is a delectable cake fridge with 6 rotating shelves with delicious looking cakes on each shelf. The coffee machine is the latest model brewing up to four cups. That must make life easier in busy times. And by the look of things this sure is a busy time.
Simoné's thoughts are interrupted when the kitchen doors open, boasting Cindy in front and mom on her heels. Mom looks the same, maybe just a few graying hairs more, but still lovely features. Her black hair cut short in a Chinese bob and her green eyes glistening with pleasure as she browses over her clients. Her eyes stop at me, and she freezes in her tracks. "Simmy, is that you?" Mom always used to call me Simmy and my smile widens. "Hallo Ma"
Martha wastes no time rounding the counter and pulling me in for a tight hug. I see the unshed tears in her eyes. "I told you!" Shaney says in my head. And I mentally just nod my head to her. "Know-it-all!"
"Come take a seat with me, Devon will run the kitchen" mom says while she drags me off to a corner table. I take off my coat and hang it over my chair.
"Right, first things first. What would you like to drink and eat?" Cindy hands me a menu. "I definitely want a Cappuccino and a Chelsea bun, please" I smile handing her the menu back. Mom turns to Cindy. "Cindy, this is my daughter, Simoné, she's been away studying for many years. You have not met her yet, as you are new in town." Cindy looks from mom to me and smiles. "Mrs. M she is beautiful; she looks just like you and has Mr. T's eyes". Mom proudly smiles, "yes, she gets her good looks from me. Can you bring me a slice of the Apple pie and some Rooibos Tea, please?" Cindy nods and hurries away to get our order ready.
Mom turns to me with a frown still smiling at me. "So, what brings you back home? You home for Christmas? Why did you not tell me you were coming? We just spoke yesterday. Why do you look so skinny? Have you been eating?"
I start laughing uncontrollably. This is sooo mom with her million questions in one breath. I take a deep breath and start talking."Well to answer all your gazillion questions" mom arches a brow. "I'm home yes. For Christmas yes or maybe longer if you will have me. I didn't tell you because it was a surprise. Surprise!" Mom starts clapping her hands feverishly.
"I am not skinny Ma yes I eat a lot; you know wolves eat a lot!" My mom smiles and grabs my hand, a serious expression on her face. " Have you seen him yet?"
Luckily at that time Cindy arrives with our order, which gives me time to recalculate my words like the lady on the GPS map directions.
The aroma of excellent cappuccino fills my nostrils and I thank Cindy before she disappears. "Time to talk!" Mom says with a wry smile on her face.
Deep breaths, Simmy deep breaths...
