Alpha Keenan paced back and forth in the quiet room, his mind in turmoil as he tried to focus on the pack business that had kept him away for far too long. The large windows of the mountain cabin overlooked a vast forest below, its peaceful silence doing little to soothe the storm raging within him. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that something was wrong.
It had been years since he'd last seen Simoné, the girl who had been a constant presence in his life since they were children, and the one who, though he'd never admitted it to anyone, held a piece of his heart. She had been away studying and building her life, but when she returned, Keenan had been called away on urgent pack business. He hadn't seen her, hadn't spoken to her face to face since her return, and it gnawed at him.
But tonight, everything changed.
Simoné had delivered news that made his blood run cold. Simoné, along with his sister Chrisanne, were planning to attend a mating party hosted by Mystic Hills, the rival pack where Alpha Clint reigned. The same Clint who had been obsessed with Simoné since high school. Keenan's hands curled into fists at the thought. Clint was dangerous, and Keenan knew all too well what Clint would do to get close to Simoné.
Without a second thought, Keenan initiated another mind link, his connection snapping open like a thread being pulled tight, this time to Duncan.
"Duncan, where the hell are you?" His voice was sharp, the command clear.
After a moment, Duncan responded, his voice uncertain. "Alpha, I'm at the packhouse. Is everything alright?"
"No, everything is not alright. Why didn't you tell me about Simoné and Chrisanne going to Mystic Hills tomorrow night?" Keenan's tone left no room for excuses.
There was a pause, and Keenan could feel Duncan's tension through the link. "I... I didn't think it was necessary to bother you while you were away. We've got it covered. Rupert, Chase, and I are going with them for protection."
Keenan's nostrils flared as he tried to keep his temper in check. "You didn't think it was necessary? It's Mystic Hills, Duncan! Clint's pack, your sister! Do you know what that means? How dangerous that is?"
"Alpha, I know—" Duncan began, but Keenan cut him off.
"Do you? Because it sounds like you're letting them walk into the lion's den with no idea of what Clint is capable of." Keenan's fists tightened at his sides, his anger only growing with each word.
"Simoné isn't helpless," Duncan said, his voice more confident now. "She's stronger than you think, Alpha. She can handle herself. She's a white wolf."
The words hit Keenan like a punch to the gut. He stopped in his tracks, the breath stolen from his lungs, maybe he heard wrong. "She's a whaaaat? What did you just say?"
Duncan went silent for a beat too long, thinking why he had left out the part of Simoné's wolf being white, before.
"Duncan, answer me," Keenan growled, his voice low and threatening.
"She... she's a white wolf," Duncan admitted, the guilt seeping into his voice. "She shifted during a fight with Rupert. It's rare, I know, but she's not the same Simoné you remember. She's powerful. She can handle herself."
Keenan's mind whirled with the revelation. Simoné... a white wolf? He hadn't known. No one had told him. White wolves were incredibly rare, their power and strength legendary among werewolf kind. He should have been told the moment it happened.
"And why, exactly, did you think it was okay not to tell me this, Beta?" Keenan demanded; his voice barely restrained.
"Alpha, it actually slipped my mind to tell you this, I was so excited when she beat Rupert that I completely forgot to tell you this." Duncan stammered. "Simoné didn't want to make a big deal out of it. But, Alpha, you have to understand, she's not the same girl she was before."
Keenan's heart pounded in his chest. He was furious—furious that Duncan hadn't told him, furious that Simoné had kept this secret, and furious that she thought she could walk into Clint's territory like she was invincible. Clint will use her against packs as a weapon, she did not deserve to be used like that.
"I don't care how powerful she is," Keenan finally said, his voice cold. "She's not going to that party without me there. Do you understand? You, Rupert, and Chase may be going with them, but I'll be there too. I don't trust Clint, and I don't care how strong Simoné is. She's still in danger. More now that she is a White wolf, don't you think Clint knows this?"
Duncan didn't argue. "I don't see how he could have found out. But I understand, Alpha."
Keenan severed the mind link, his hands trembling with the intensity of his emotions. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm within him. The fact that Simoné was a white wolf only added to the danger. Clint would stop at nothing to claim her if he found out. Keenan couldn't let that happen.
As he stared out into the night, his thoughts were consumed by the image of Simoné—her strength, her power, and the girl he had always longed for. Tomorrow night, he would make sure she was safe, even if it meant going to war with Clint.
He turned away and opened his phone, searched for the number and dialed, when the line was picked up, he immediately started talking.
"Alpha Steven, I need a driver early tomorrow morning please. I need to go back to my pack for an urgent matter."
After the call was disconnected, he turned to his closet, removing his suitcase and started throwing in his clothes haphazardly. He mind linked his two warriors telling them to be ready early as they are heading back to the pack.
No one—no one—was going to take Simoné away from him, and his wolf agreed wholeheartedly with him.
"I will rip him to pieces if he so much as touches a hair on her head" Kent growled in his mind, and Keenan felt the exact same way.
