JULIA MARTIN LOVED NURSING. For her, it was never a chore—it was a calling. She'd always loved kids, helping people, and her mother, who was a pediatric surgeon. She'd been raised around hospitals her entire life, and her parents always encouraged her to become a nurse or at least someone who worked in the medical field. She'd always been bright, skipping the 2nd grade and graduating a year early, so they knew she could do it.

And she did.

And sure, it wasn't an easy job. Seeing so many sick children took its toll on her, but being there to help them get well made all the long shifts and heartache worth it. The smiles on their faces and the pure innocence in their eyes made it all worth it.

"Hey, Luna." Julia grinned as she walked into room 333, seeing her favorite patient awake.

The seven-year-old little girl was fighting a rare form of Leukemia but she was a little ball of energy and hope. Her parents had to work day and night and only got to visit every few days but the rest of the time, Julia was her best friend.

Luna's big brown eyes lit up, and she sat up straighter. "Nurse Julia!" She beamed, her smile bright and toothy. She was clutching a stuffed cat, who was named Mr. Mittens, to her chest. Mr. Mittens had a little blue hat and bow tie that Julia had sewn on for her.

"You know what time it is," Julia said, holding up the small plastic cup of pills.

"Yuck," Luna sighed, making a face.

"I know," Julia nodded sympathetically, grabbing a paper cup and filling it up with water, "But it's for your own good."

Luna opened her mouth obediently and let Julia put the pills in her mouth, handing her the cup of water. She swallowed the pills, then drank the whole cup of water, gasping as she finished. "Ew."

Julia chuckled, sitting down on the edge of her bed. "I know, I'm sorry, but they're good for you."

"They taste like feet," Luna complained, frowning.

Julia laughed and shook her head. "You've had feet before?"

Emma rolled her eyes, and Julia could tell that she'd picked that up from her. "No."

"Then how do you know what they taste like?" she challenged.

"Because," she shrugged, "they just do."

Julia smiled and smoothed her hair back, which had fallen out of her pigtails. "How are you feeling?"

"Good because Daddy's coming tomorrow!"

Julia's heart melted at the joy on her face. She'd been dealt some shitty cards and had gone through a lot, but she always loved when her parents visited. They were good people and had to work a lot to be able to pay their daughter's hospital bills, but they called her every day and were there as much as possible.
