The next morning I am awoken by the loud sound of Melissa bursting through our white wooden door. I glance at my alarm clock: 5.01. As usual, Melissa had woken up early to go on her morning jog but today she has arrived back very early and a lot happier than other days.
"Han, you'll never guess what!" she shrieks, "look what I was given. One for me and one for you" she holds her hand out to reveal two pieces of evapo-paper. They're green, which indicates it's something good but also something important. I take one from her and read the message:
Girls, meet me in my office at 6 am sharp
Mr Morgan
I pop the small paper in my mouth and wait for it to disintegrate, with the taste of cardboard on my tongue.
"Isn't it great!?" She laughs "maybe we're getting asked to organise a whole-school party. Or maybe he wants us to teach some classes to the younger students"
She talks more and more about all of the possibilities as I sit here getting really irritated by her.
As kind as Melissa is, her voice is just so annoying. She never shuts up. For some reason she always has something to talk about, even if it is utter nonsense that I don't give two hoots about! If she talks for 30 seconds or more, I zone out and stop listening.
Right now, I just walk away and lock myself in our little bathroom. First I wash my face. Then I brush my teeth. After that I put on a little bit of make-up to cover some blemishes.
I look in the mirror. I see the same dark hair falling in neat waves past my shoulders and down my back. My pale skin is slightly covered in concealer and my eyelashes are black and naturally long. I smile, sensing butterflies in my tummy. What if this is something amazing? One, two, three times Melissa knocks on the huge, wooden double-doors. Meanwhile, I twiddle with my thumbs, anxious to know what information awaits us on the opposite side of these doors.
"Miss Green;Miss Harding, come on in" we hear the deep voice call from the other side of the room separator.
Eerily, I push the wood and open the door. Then I walk in and, along with Melissa, sit at his desk.
He looks at us as if we're meant to say something so after a few seconds I say "I... Er... You told us... I mean sent a message to tell us to come to you at 6"
"Indeed. But it is not 6 yet" he simply replies. I glance at the digital clock on his desk. The time reads 5:59. Mr Morgan is a bit weird about being punctual. He always says that if somebody tells you a time you do not arrive either early or late, only right on time.
I watch the clock for almost a whole minute until I finally see it change to 6:00.
"As you are clearly aware, you have had your 16th birthday"- yeah, about four months ago- "so I think it's time your espionage skills are put into action"
Is he saying what I think he's saying?
"I'm not quite following" Melissa blurts
"I have had a request from MI6 HQ asking me to spy on a rather important group of people. However, with my old age comes the health problems and you probably are aware of my heart problems" ugh yes. We don't hear anything but his 'heart' problems and how we can't be too loud because it will 'effect' him or we can't randomly knock on his door without warning in case it startles him.
"Are you asking us to take up the job?" I ask excitedly. I feel like a little girl on Christmas Day.
"Yes, Miss Green, that is exactly what I'm asking" he sits up a little straighter, "so what do you say? Are you ready to start your career?"
"Yes!" We squeal simultaneously
"Good" he strokes the baldness of his head.
Oh. My. Gosh. No way! I discreetly pinch myself to make sure that this is real and that I'm not dreaming. Nope. It's real
"So... Er... Who is it that we're spying on?" I ask nervously. I'm never good at speaking to people
"Sean and Justin Woods" who?
Melissa instantly stands up and screams "No way! No way!" Then she starts to cry
"Wait, who?" I say. I am so confused.
"Only THE WOODS BROTHERS!!!" She screams, obviously disappointed that I hadn't realised sooner.
Oh for goodness' sake. She is so ridiculous. You'd think that Mr Morgan had just said that we have been appointed to protect the queen.
To be really honest, I should do this mission by myself because I know that Melissa will get distracted by the whole 'good looking guy' situation. Although, if you ask me, I'd say they are just two average-looking teenage males with a talent for singing that have had their big break."Stay well hidden and watch them secretly. Don't get caught" he directs, then motions with his hand for us to shoo.
