chapter 1: the prank

**Josie's POV**

I tapped my foot impatiently, watching my breath fog up in the chilly air of the convenience store. Charlie was taking forever, slowly counting out change at the counter to pay for a small can of chili.

"Come on, Charlie," I muttered.

He flashed me an unbothered smile. "Gotta make sure I've got the exact change, Josie."

I rolled my eyes, shifting from one foot to the other. "You're impossible."

Finally, Charlie put the change on the counter, grabbed the can of chili, and stuffed it into his jacket pocket. As we headed for the door, I couldn't help but laugh.

He shook his head, but a smile came onto his face too. "Finally! Let's get out of here before we freeze."

We stepped out into the cold and started running to the alley where the rest of the boys were waiting.

Charlie and I sprinted down the street, our breath puffing out in quick bursts of steam.

"Hurry up, Liz!" Charlie yelled, glancing back at me.

"I'm going as fast as I can!" I yelled back.

When we reached the alley, the boys looked up eagerly. "Did you get it?" they all asked; all their eyes were on Charlie as he pulled the can of chili out of his pocket.

Charlie grinned and held up the chili. "Yep, right here," he said, handing it to Karp.

"Here, Petie. A little chili to keep you warm, buddy," Karp said with a grin as a little white and brown dog came out of the corner, sniffing around. Karp set the chili down, and the dog sniffed some more before finally eating it.

We followed the dog like lost puppies, waiting for it to squat. When it finally did, the boys started arguing over who was going to pick up the poop.

After some arguing, averman picked it up. We set the trap and darted behind a big truck, laughing as we peeked over the top. It didn't take long before a man driving by slowed down, noticing the purse we'd put there.

We all tried to peek around the truck to get a better view. The man stopped, got out of the car, and glanced around before bending down to pick up the purse, examining it like he'd just found a diamond. We could barely contain our laughter, cracking jokes about the guy and the purse.

The man shook his head, chuckling to himself, and hopped back in his car with the purse.

But just as he started driving away, he suddenly stopped screamed and threw the purse out the window. We burst out laughing—until the man looked back and spotted us.

"Oh, guys, he saw us!" Peter said as we all scrambled to get away, as we heard the man's car behind us.

We all went into an alleyway jumping the gate and running as the man tried to jump the gate too we went through a construction tube and balanced on a wooden plank

We all looked back at the man as we heard a crunch when we turned around the man fell into some mud we all started cheering and high-fiving after we went over to the frozen lake
