a/n: loosely based off "summertimes close" by zach bryan.

the cold morning air blew through the upstairs window, chilling your body. you sit in bed, watching tv. your wife, karissa was at work. today was your day off, something you didn't get too often. sitting on the nightstand next to you, your phone starts to ring. a picture of you and your wife lit the screen, as karissa called. you pick up, and smile.

"hey baby." she says, her morning voice coming over the speaker.

"hey mama. wassup?"

"just on my break. thought i'd hear your voice."

"you still got morning voice ma, your voice is hottt."

karissa laughs, "oh really, morgan? is it?"

"yes, karissa. it is."

"i miss you."

"no, i miss you more."

"no, that's impossible."

"yes, i miss you more."

"no."

"yes."

"nope."

"yup. kay, you literally lose every time. don't even with me."

"blah blah blah. hey, i should be outta here by 3, you wanna go out tonight?"

"see, i literally won again. but that sounds good babe."

"it's fuckin hot. i'm hot as fuck."

"y-you're hot? mama, may i remind you that it's 40 and freezing."

"well, try going for a two mile run in full uniform, with a 45 pound rucksack on your back. then see how you feel."

"well, i'm freezing. you needa come home and warm me up. asap. i'm more of a priority than the army."

"mm, i can't do that. six hours till i'm off, you think you can last six hours?"

"no. and why the fuck did you leave the damn window open last night? knowing damn well it was gonna be freezing cold."

"because. i wanted to." you hear karissa say something under her breath, and ask her what's wrong. "i have to do training. combat training."

"what's that mean?"

"shooting practice, baby. infantry."

"karissa bardsley so help me god-"

"calm down, i'm not gonna die."

"you literally don't know that. how do you know that?"

"um, maybe because i know?"

someone yells in the background, and karissa swears. "shit. i've gotta go. i'll text you when i can. i love you."

"be safe. i love you more."

the line disconnects, and your phone rings again. this time, it was karissa's mom, kim.

"hey mama!" you say, smiling.

"hey morgan, a-are you working today?"

"no, i'm uh-i'm off today. why? what's up?"

"well i just want a second opinion on something. but it's no big deal."

"no, no, i need to pick something up anyway, where are you?"

"radiology."

"alright, i'll see you in about 30?"

"okay, great. i'll see you then. thank you honey. love you."
