After what felt like hours of walking, the girls finally saw the trailer in the distance, nestled among the trees. It was so familiar to Lainey—old, worn down, and full of ghosts from her past. The sight of it made her stomach churn, but she kept her expression steady, even as her heart pounded in her chest.
"There it is," Lainey said, her voice low but firm. "We're almost there."
May and Bianca glanced at each other, sharing a silent understanding. This was the moment they'd been building up to, the reason they'd come all this way. As they got closer, the reality of what they were about to do settled over them like a heavy fog.
"So, what's the plan?" Bianca asked, breaking the tense silence.
Lainey took a deep breath. "I'm going to confront them about everything," she said, her voice steady, but her eyes hard. "About what they did to me, how they ruined my life. I need to do this alone. You guys... I don't want you listening in."
May bit her lip, looking unsure. "Are you sure? Maybe we should be there, you know, just in case?"
"No," Lainey shook her head. "This is something I need to handle on my own. But..." She hesitated, glancing at the trailer. "If you want, you can... I don't know, mess the place up a bit. Just... keep them out of the way."
May's eyes widened a bit, and she exchanged a nervous look with Bianca. "Mess the place up?"
Bianca's face lit up with a mischievous grin. "Like trashing the trailer? That's not a bad idea, actually. It'll scare the hell out of them."
Lainey shrugged, her expression unreadable. "Yeah. Something like that."
The girls nodded in agreement, their plan set. As they reached the trailer, they paused outside, exchanging a final look. This was it—the moment of truth. Lainey squared her shoulders, feeling a surge of determination. She wasn't that scared little girl anymore; she was ready to face her demons.
"Ready?" Bianca asked, her voice low.
Lainey nodded. "Ready."
They entered the trailer, the door creaking on its hinges. Inside, the place was exactly as Lainey remembered it—cramped, musty, and filled with memories she'd rather forget. She could feel her heart racing as she walked deeper inside, her footsteps echoing in the silence.
May looked around, her eyes wide as she took in the surroundings. She'd never been here before, but she could feel the weight of the past in every corner. She glanced at Bianca, who gave her an encouraging nod.
"Just start small," Bianca whispered. "Throw something, break something. You'll get the hang of it."
May swallowed hard, her hands trembling slightly as she picked up a small lamp. She hesitated, looking at it like it was some foreign object, before she finally mustered the courage to toss it across the room. It shattered against the wall with a satisfying crash, and May flinched, her heart pounding in her ears.
"Good," Bianca said quietly, picking up a picture frame and hurling it to the ground, glass splintering everywhere. "See? It's easy."
May took a deep breath, the initial shock of what she'd done wearing off. She grabbed another item—a vase this time—and threw it harder, letting out a small gasp as it shattered. The thrill of destruction sent a strange sense of relief washing over her. She grabbed more things, books, and knick-knacks, throwing them with more force, more anger.
Bianca watched her, a proud smile on her face as May finally started to come out of her shell. She joined in, her movements calculated and deliberate as she upended a chair and kicked over a small table. The two of them worked in silence, their actions synchronized, a shared catharsis in their destruction.
