The school dance was in full swing, the air thick with the smell of cheap perfume and sweat.  Nathaniel stood by the punch bowl, watching Harvey across the crowded gym.  Harvey was laughing with his friends, his eyes sparkling with mischief.  Nathaniel felt a pang of jealousy.  He wanted to be the one making Harvey laugh, the one he was looking at with that playful smile.

Nathaniel took a deep breath and forced himself to relax.  He had come to the dance with his own friends, Tristan and Leo, and he was having a good time.  But his eyes kept drifting back to Harvey.  He couldn't help but wonder what Harvey was thinking, what he was feeling.  Were they still on the same page?  Did Harvey feel the same way about him?

As the night went on, Nathaniel found himself dancing with Tristan and Leo, but his mind was elsewhere.  He kept thinking about the fight they had had earlier that week.  It had been a stupid fight, really, about nothing.  But it had left Nathaniel feeling hurt and confused.  He had been so angry at Harvey, so frustrated by their constant bickering, that he had blurted out the truth: he was in love with him.

Harvey had been shocked.  He had stammered and looked away, and then he had stormed off.  Nathaniel had been left standing there, his heart pounding in his chest.  He had never felt so vulnerable, so exposed.

Now, as he watched Harvey from across the gym, Nathaniel realized that he had made a mistake.  He had confessed his feelings too soon, too impulsively.  He didn't know how Harvey felt, and he had scared him away.

Nathaniel was about to go over to Harvey and apologize when he saw him talking to a girl he didn't recognize.  The girl was laughing, and Harvey was leaning in, his eyes focused on her.  Nathaniel's stomach twisted with a mixture of jealousy and fear.  Was Harvey moving on?  Was he already forgetting about him?

Nathaniel turned away, his heart sinking.  He couldn't bear to watch.  He excused himself from his friends and went outside, needing some fresh air.  He leaned against the wall of the school, his head in his hands.  He was so confused, so lost.  He didn't know what to do.

Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder.  He looked up and saw Harvey standing there, his expression serious.

"Nathaniel," Harvey said softly.  "I need to talk to you."

Nathaniel's heart leaped.  He had been hoping that Harvey would come after him.  He nodded, his voice hoarse.

Harvey led him to a secluded spot behind the school, away from the noise and the flashing lights of the dance.  He turned to face Nathaniel, his eyes searching his.

"I know I ran off the other day," Harvey said.  "I was just… shocked.  I wasn't expecting you to say that."

"I'm sorry," Nathaniel said.  "I shouldn't have said anything.  I just… I couldn't keep it in anymore."

"It's okay," Harvey said.  "I understand.  And I… I need you to know that I feel the same way about you.  I've been feeling it for a long time."

Nathaniel's eyes widened.  He couldn't believe what he was hearing.  Harvey was in love with him too?

"Really?" Nathaniel asked, his voice trembling.

Harvey nodded, a small smile playing on his lips.  "Really.  I just… I was scared.  I didn't know how to handle it."

Nathaniel felt a wave of relief wash over him.  He was not alone.  Harvey loved him too.

"I'm so glad," Nathaniel said, a happy sigh escaping his lips.  "I'm so glad you feel the same way."

Harvey took a step closer, his eyes locked on Nathaniel's.  "I'm glad too," he said.  "Now, let's go back inside and dance."

Nathaniel smiled, his heart overflowing with love.  He took Harvey's hand and they walked back to the gym, ready to face the world together.
