"Will you be going night fishing again tonight?"

"Why wouldn't I?"

You gazed at your mother's concerned face as she scrunched up her face in concern. You knew what was coming. One of her paranoid rants again as she always did.

"You know that there's been a few disappearances of young girls in in the area. What if something happens to you while you're out?"

"Oh, Mother. Not this again."

This is what she was concerned about? It wasn't even in your area. A few months ago there was a meteor shower and the same night seven girls went missing followed up by a few others from surrounding villages of that particular town. You wouldn't deny that WAS strange, but no one from your small village went missing. In fact the latest disappearance was of a pair of sisters in the complete next town over. So even if there was lots of kidnappers going around, they certainly weren't around here.

"I have a right to be concerned."

"You said the same thing when I moved out and got my own job and chose to not settle down with a husband. I swear you're so paranoid about everything."

"And for a good reason! Do you have to go out tonight?"

"Yes. It's less crowded that way.The waters are always crowded with men and boys during the day. It's a favorite past time for them....and not many of them appreciate a woman intruding into their 'territory.'"

Your mother hummed. "It's a dangerous thing to do, walking around at night by yourself. Especially for a girl."

"I only do it when the nights are clear and warm." You smiled widely. "I'll be safe near the village. A few good meals of fish will be worth losing a few hours of sleep."

"I still say it's foolish...but if you're insisting on going out tonight, pick up some wild basil for me. I'm starting to run low."

Your lips smiled wider. "I will. There's some near a small pond not too far outside of the village."

"Hm. I just hope you know what you're doing."

"I'll be alright. You'll see."

You should have heeded the warnings.

Warm blue skies faded to make way for her dark sister to claim for night. The sun kissing the horizon good night as it's last few rays of light disappeared from sight. Mothers called their children inside their warm houses to sleep in their cozy beds safe and sound until the next morning. The silence was peaceful on the warm summer night breezes. The calmness soothing the crickets to sing their lullabies to the dimming lights of the homes. Lantern lights being put to sleep after a long usage. The bustling town settling down and falling asleep soundly.
