You needed a job.
And you needed one BADLY.
It's not that you needed it really desperately and you weren't certainly poor or in debt. But you still needed a job or else you were afraid you might be married off soon. Your parents were afraid of you being able to get by 'without a man' and had been discussing the future and you getting married to a good man. You weren't dumb. All your friends and family members around your age were already married off with a few even already starting families now but you were neither married or engaged to anyone despite there already being a few men showing interest in you and your parents encouraging you to go on dates with them.
Maybe it was just you but you didn't feel ready. For marriage or a family. And obviously the men asking you to marry them wanted both.
By this point your parents were starting to get concerned about your lack of marriage and you were afraid they were going to engage you off to someone soon. So you came up with a simple idea. Get a job. If your parents were concerned about you being self sufficient then getting a job would be the easiest way to ease their worries and not put he idea of engaging you to anyone on the table. So you began your job hunt the very next day.. However things were a little difficult to say the least. It seemed like no one wanted to hire you.
The pub-
"Sorry lady. I already have all the waitresses I need."
Anyone's homes-
"I don't need a cleaning lady! I got a wife that does that for me!"
"I don't need a babysitter. My mother loves watching my children."
"Why would I need a servant? That's the whole point of me having a wife."
The schoolhouse-
"Are you trying to take my job? I assure you I don't need any woman around here thinking that she's smarter than a man!"
You tried everywhere! The seamstress shop, the bakery, even the local butcher shop. Everyone only turned you down or yelled at you to get out. Now what were you going to do? There wasn't a single one who would hire you or wanted to. The very last house you tried declined you again as you stood there looking at him deflated.
"Sorry, Lady. I got all the farmhands I need and it's no job for a woman."
"What am I going to do? I already tried everywhere else in town."
"Have you tried that house up the mountain?"
You blinked looking at the farmer again. "What?"
