_MIA'S POV_I stare blankly at the doctor, my lips parting on their own before finding their way back to meet again. Like in a trance, my eyes travel back into the ward where my already pale mother lay.
A lone tear slid down my face as my eyes travel back to meet the doctor's who places his hand on my shoulder reassuringly. "there is still time to save her" he says before leaving.
Where and how on earth do I get ₦1.2M. "The patient has dilated cardiomyopathy. We must perform a heart transplant. She has only 12 hours left. To carry on the procedures, you have to deposit ₦1.2M. See the receptionist for the procedures".
The doctor's words rang in my ears.Where do I arrange for such a huge amount of money. My mom did nothing to deserve this, I caused it, it's all my fault. I should have paid more attention to her. If I had taken good care of her maybe I would have noticed that she was sick and get her treated at the earliest but it was too late.
Though I grew up without a father, my mom took up the responsibility of both a father and a mother. She worked day and night just so I could get a proper education.
I had noticed something off with her for the past few days but I was too careless to believe the excuses she made. She was always like this, never shares her problems with me just so she wouldn't burden me with responsibilities but I should have persisted.
No! It isn't too late, I must save my mom at all costs. I wipe my tears, reaching for my phone in my pockets before dialing Mark's number.
Mark is my boyfriend. We started dating like 6 months ago.
"Please pick up" i click on the dial button again but he doesn't pick up. I tried calling Chloe who picks up after the first few rings.
Chloe is my best friend and a sister i never had. We've been friends since highschool. She's beautiful and outgoing, more of an extrovert who likes parties, boys and other stuff related to boys. We became friends by chance.
I mean we were never close till we had a class presentation where we were both in the same group so we worked together and since then we've been... you know, best friends.
"Hey babe, what's up"
"I need your help" I say holding back the tears that threatened to fall.
"You don't sound alright Mia, you know what, meet me at my apartment." She says.
"okay" I reply taking one last glance at my mother before leaving the hospital.I arrive at Chloe's apartment, a studio apartment she got after college where we hang out most of the time.
I ring the doorbell a few times, my hands shivering from cold or maybe fear.
After about 6 rings or so, Chloe opens the door. "Am sorry I delayed you. Come on in" she says making way for me to come in.
I don't know if it was because of how silly I looked in front of Chloe or the fact that she had a guy in her apartment but I couldn't help but let the tears flow.
Chloe pulled me in for a hug"it's okay, everything will be alright" she kept saying comforting words as her hands stroke my back.
"Chloe, my mom..."
