I had fallen asleep at some point during our conversation about our oh so wonderful families. I opened my eyes as the sun shined brightly causing me to cringe. I looked around for Calum only to see that he was nowhere to be seen. Raising my seat I looked out the window, we were at an empty gas station that had had a red car parked out front. I groaned as I fumbled around looking for my phone. Everything that happened last night felt like a dream. I swore I thought when I woke up today I'd be in the same bed that I've had since I was 13.
My screen saver picture of me and smith lit up as I turned on my phone. It was a picture of me and him making the stupidest faces. I smiled at the memory before something else caught my eye. I had 10 missed calls and 30 text messages all from smith, and of course non from my mother.
Where the hell are you?
One text message read, The rest were basically smith saying he went to my house and all my stuff was gone. I thought about calling him before my thoughts were interrupted by Calum getting into the car with two coffees and a bagel.
"Morning" he says smiling his accent seemed deeper this morning. He hands me coffee and I eagerly take it, I literally cannot start my day without it. A habit I most likely got from my mother.
"Morning" I reply taking a sip of the hot liquid.
"You sleep cute." He says out of nowhere chuckling at my expression. I don't say anything as I pull down the mirror on the car roof and look at my reflection. My eyes have small bags underneath them. Yesterday's mascara had moved from my eyelashes to the sides of my eyes giving me a panda like appearance. I frantically wipe at the side of my eyes in hopes that Calum won't notice it. Who am I kidding a blind person could see this.
"What are you doing?" Calum laughs at me as I attempt to rub away the black ink on the side of my eyes.
"My mascara smeared." I groan and he laughs harder.
"You look fine." he says starting the car and pulling out of the gas station. I roll my eyes at him as he gets on the highway.
"Oh hush" I say and he groans.
"You never look bad, I mean have you seen yourself." he says and I look at him as if he had grown a second head.
"You need to get your eyesight checked" I scoff.
"No I think you do if you can't see what I do." He sighs and my mouth falls open. I don't know why I cant take a compliment.
My phone vibrates and I pick it up, smith is calling again. I answer it and prepare myself to hear a very frantic smith.
"Where are you?!" Smith yells and I pull the phone away from my ear so that I don't bust an ear drum.
"Its a long story." I sigh putting my phone back up to my ear. Calum gives me a curious look but doesn't say anything. A passing car blares it's horn at a car to move.
"Are you driving? You don't even have a car! What? Did you steal your moms car? Or are you with someone?!" The questions come out like bullets and I am failing to dodge them.
"Im ok smith." I say smoothly hoping that if I act like I'm ok he'll just drop it.
"Jesus christ Indiana! You disappear in the middle of the night with absolutely no explanation, except a letter and all you have to say is your ok!!" He's practically screaming now.
"I'm going to New York with a friend." I squeak.
"What friend?! Is it someone from school? I hate to break it to you Indiana but you don't have that many!"
Ouch.
"So if your being coerced into saying this just give me a sign, anything." He says and I nearly laugh at the thought of me being kidnapped by Calum. In all honesty if I were kidnapped, I'd go willingly just to be able to leave that town.
"I'm not being coerced smith" I sigh. "I'm going on a road trip with a friend of mines and it's going to be okay, you can even meet me down there if you like."
"What about our trip?! we were going to travel and then go to New York!"
"I thought you wouldn't want to go after what happened at dinner." I say and Calum shoots me a look, I choose to ignore it and wait for smith to respond.
"How could you think that? Just because you don't return my feelings doesn't mean I would deny you the chance to leave white post. I know how important that is to you, do you really think so lowly of me?"
I feel the guilt start to seep through the wall of denial that I had built up over the pass 6 hours since I had left.
"I'm so sorry, I just thought..."
"You thought what? That I'd just leave behind with your mother." He spits and I want nothing more for this whole thing to be a simple nightmare.
"I'm sorry smith, I swear I am but I had to get out and I wasn't prepared for what happened that night."
"Where are you I'm coming to get you." He says and I consider telling him for a moment but I remember Calum. Smith would take one look at Calum's ripped black skinny jeans and band tees and instantly assume he was some hoodlum . Which will most likely cause him to call the cops on him, I seriously don't want him getting in trouble with the cops for no reason. Not to mention he left home as well and I'm pretty sure that he doesn't want his dad to find him.
"Don't worry about it, I'll see you in New York." I sigh before hanging up the phone call ignoring smith's protest.
"Is everything ok?" Calum asks as I turn my phone off.
"Yea" I reply but he looks as if he doesn't believe me. I am thankful when he doesn't ask me any more questions.
