Esme laid in her bed staring at the ceiling listening to the clock ticking on her wall and the soft snores of her roommate. She rolled over and looked at the time. 1:39 am. Sighing, she sat up and put her slippers on. She slipped her robe on and left her dorm room and went down to the common room."What are you doing up?" She heard from behind her. She whipped around holding her wand to the unknown figure and let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in. "You're ok. It's just me" he shook his head with a laugh, running a hand through his blonde hair.
"I just couldn't sleep. I thought I would come down here" She muttered. He nodded and sat down on the couch. The common room was wrapped in darkness, the only light coming from a small lamp casting a soft, amber glow over the living room the quiet hum of the night enveloping them. The world outside was still, as if time had slowed just for them.
They sat close, but not too close, their legs brushing occasionally as they adjusted themselves. The boy absentmindedly flipped through an old book, not really reading, while the girl rested her head on the back of the couch, her eyes half-closed, holding a book and gazing out the window at the moonlit sky. They didn't speak—there was no need to.
The silence between them was peaceful, like the soft embrace of a familiar blanket. A feeling of quiet understanding lingered in the air. Draco leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, his gray eyes studying Esme with faint curiosity. They sat alone in the dimly lit room, the usual sneer absent from his face, replaced by something more inquisitive, almost cautious.
"So, Esme..." he began, his voice low and smooth, though carrying an edge of impatience, "you don't talk much, do you?"
Esme glanced up from the book she had been pretending to read, her dark eyes meeting his briefly before drifting to the side. She hesitated, as if weighing whether or not to answer. Draco raised an eyebrow, leaning forward slightly, intrigued by her silence.
"Come on," he urged, a smirk tugging at his lips. "I've been surrounded by people who love to talk about themselves my entire life. I wouldn't mind hearing from someone a bit more... interesting for a change."
Esme sighed softly, closing the book with a quiet thud. She met his gaze fully now, her expression unreadable. "What is it you want to know, Draco?"
"Anything," he replied, his tone more sincere now. "Who are you, really? What's going on in that head of yours? Why did you come here in fourth year"
The question hung in the air, and for a moment, the silence between them felt almost comfortable.
"Well I'm the daughter of Evan and Arabella Rosier. I like to read, my favorite season is fall, My birthday is October fifteen nineteen seventy nine -" She continued but then was cut off by him.
"You know what I mean, Rosier" He said to the girl. She looked at him and sighed.
"Fighting. I got expelled for fighting" She said to the boy. He smirked and nodded laughing to himself.
"Mother and father probably weren't to happy about that were they?" He asked. She let out a laugh and looked out the window.
"Well they were more worried about appearance rather then what happened" She laughed. They sat there in silence once again.
"I think I'm going to head to bed. I'll see you around Esmeralda" He trailed off. She gave him a smile and walked off leaving her alone on the couch. She sat there for another hour until she went back to bed for another hour.
"Esme you have to get up or your going to late on the first day." Ophelia said shaking her. Esme sat up with a groan and swung her feet over the bed the cold ground instantly waking her up a little more. She walked to the bathroom with her uniform in her hand. Closing the door behind her she sighed looking at herself in the mirror. Slowly she took her pajamas off and put her uniform on. She brushed her hair out and did a quick spell to straighten it then put on some makeup trying to cover the purple bags under her eye's. She sighed and walked out of her bathroom to an empty room. She grabbed her bag and walked out of her dorm and headed to the great hall. She walked into the filled room and headed over to the Slytherin table.
