The safe house was finally taking shape, becoming a fortress of sorts. The new base of operations was more than just a temporary fix; it was designed to be a stronghold, a place where we could regroup, strategize, and prepare for the war against Crowley. The renovations were extensive, turning an old, abandoned warehouse into a fortified haven with high-tech security systems, ample living space, and a well-stocked armory.
Dean, now more mobile in his wheelchair, was present during one of our crucial meetings about the safe house. His physical healing was slow but steady, and he was increasingly able to move around on his own, though he still relied on the wheelchair for longer distances. His mental health, while improved, was a mixed bag. He no longer felt like a burden, and his conversations with us had shifted from self-blame to focusing on the practical aspects of our situation. Yet, the guilt he carried from his previous actions and decisions continued to weigh heavily on him, especially in his interactions with me.
That afternoon, the team had gathered in the main room of the safe house to discuss final preparations and logistical details. Dean, wrapped in a blanket with Mom's cover draped across his lap, sat among us. His presence was a reassuring constant, even if he was still grappling with his internal struggles.
Jody, Ellen, and Rufus were pouring over blueprints and maps, discussing the layout of the safe house and final security measures. Bobby was on the phone, coordinating with the other Hunters we had reached out to. Castiel and Gabriel were discussing celestial support, ensuring we had every possible angle covered.
Dean looked around the room, taking in the bustling activity with a mix of fatigue and determination. His gaze occasionally drifted to me, and I could see the lingering guilt in his eyes. He was trying hard to keep his composure, but the weight of his past actions still tugged at him.
As the conversation turned to the defensive capabilities of the safe house, Dean spoke up, his voice steady but tinged with regret. "I know I wasn't exactly the best team player before... and I'm sorry for that. I know I made things harder for everyone."
The room fell silent as everyone turned their attention to Dean. It was clear that he was still wrestling with his sense of responsibility for the past turmoil, and it hurt to see him struggling with it. I wanted to reassure him, but I also knew he needed to come to terms with it in his own time.
"Dean," I said softly, "you don't need to keep apologizing. We're all in this together. What matters is that you're here now, and we're moving forward. We've all made mistakes, and we're all working to fix them. You don't have to carry this alone."
Dean nodded, though he looked unconvinced. "I just... I keep thinking about how much my decisions hurt you, Sam. I know you've been through hell—literally—and I don't want to be the cause of more pain."
Bobby, who had just ended his phone call, joined the conversation. "Dean, listen. You've been through a lot, and we've all made mistakes. What's important now is that we focus on what's ahead. You're part of this team, and we need you."
The tension in the room eased slightly as Bobby's words sank in. Dean's shoulders relaxed a bit, though the guilt was still evident in his eyes. He turned his attention back to the discussion, trying to contribute where he could.
The meeting continued with updates on the progress of the safe house and final plans for the impending conflict. Everyone was deeply focused on the task at hand, but there were occasional glances at Dean, who was doing his best to be present and involved despite his lingering self-doubt.
After the meeting, I stayed behind to help clean up. Dean was alone in the room, staring at the blueprints with a contemplative expression. I approached him and sat down next to him, giving him a reassuring smile.
