"Alright Ade, I think that's everything I'll need," I say and I stuff the last items in my overnight bag.
I feel so out of sorts about this whole thing. Something doesn't sit right about this. I know it's got to do with Eric. He is such a piss poor excuse of a human being and I can't see why my mom even stays with him. I can't stand it. She won't listen to me and that drives me insane. She always used to listen. Even if she didn't act on it, she would listen. Isn't that what we all want? A parent who is willing to just sit there and listen? I miss my mom and how she used to be. This new boss and relationship has screwed with our lives and she is so blindsided she can't even see that.
"Do you think I can grab something from the kitchen before we go?" Adelade asks. Damn this girl can eat. She doesn't even give me the chance to answer before she's out of the room and on her way to the kitchen. Why did she bother asking if she was going to do it anyway.
"Sure, why not. It's not like you're already doing it," I whisper to myself and roll my eyes. That's another thing that aggravates me. Like why be so inconsiderate and ask a question and not be respectful and wait to get an answer. I knows she's doing a lot and helping my me out but c'mon.
I am doing another sweep of my room to see if there is anything I'm missing and suddenly stop in my tracks. Something doesn't feel right. I feel like I'm being watched. I quickly dart my head to look out the window. Everything looks normal. No one is around. I still have a shiver that runs down my spine. I don't want to leave the house. But I don't have a choice. At least I have Adelade with me or else I would have just stayed and dealt with whatever came my way when my mother got home.
"Lisa, are you coming?" Adelade yells from the kitchen.
"Yea! Coming."
Running to Adelade's spot in the house I try and leave all my worries and feelings behind. I need to relax. I'm staying with a friend, my best friend, for a whole week. What could go wrong? So what she annoys me with her it's all about me attitude and her snappy/bossy personality. It's not like it's anything new. I just deal with it. It's something I've always done. I'd rather leave it alone than deal with the conflict. Why make a fuss? If I just ignore it, it goes away. Yea it bothers me but what am I supposed to do? If I say anything I'll look like I'm pushy or even worse, she'll leave and I'll have no one.
"Girl, did I tell you what happened today? Oh my gosh..." We exit my house and I make sure I lock the door before leaving. Adelade starts telling me something about something happening in one of her classes, but I don't really have a care to listen. I hum answers and give the classic "no way" response when needed, but I'm not really listening. I have too much on my mind to pay attention.
About 10 minutes into the walk I get that shiver I felt in my room. I quickly stop walking and turn around, but there is no one behind us. What the hell?
"Are you ok?" Adelade asks.
"Yea, I just thought I heard something." I turn back around and we continue our walk. That feeling never went away and I try and use my peripherals to see. I think I'm going crazy.
We are passing house after house. Every now and then someone would turn into their driveway returning home from a long day at work. I never noticed how many of my neighbors have black SUV's. In the last 5 minutes I've seen at least 8. Is that weird? I'm overthinking it. I shake my head and push the thought away. Out of the corner of my eye There is another black SUV that starts to turn into an alleyway right in front of us to our left. Adelade was talking and looking at her phone so she didn't see them. I had to pull her toward me to let them pull in. The windows were tinted so I couldn't see them but I gave them the small grin and the "you're welcome" anyway. We stopped to let them pull all the way in but for some reason they stopped. Did they take a wrong turn? Probably.
The driver rolls down their window and I see I white man around his mid 30's early 40's call us over. "Can you girls help me out? I'm lost and I need to get to my wife's coworkers party. I told her I'd meet her there but I'm going in circles."
"Of course you can!" Adelafe skips over to the driver. I stay a good distance behind. Something isn't right. The man takes out his phone to pull up the address. Why isn't he just using the navigation?
"Adel-" I start to speak but something, more like someone, grabs me from behind and pulls a white cloth over my mouth.
I try and fight them off but they are too strong. I can't move an inch. I doubt I'm making any noise. My limbs start to feel weak and my eyelids feel so heavy. I try to get Adelade's attention but it's no use. The last thing I see is the driver look at me over Adelade's shoulder and give me the most evil smirk I have ever seen. Then everything turns black.
