"Fuck!"

Nicka cussed to herself as she squeezed herself into the crowd of students in the waiting shed. Today was stormy due to a tropical storm. Yesterday's classes and the day before yesterday had already been suspended.

Nicka woke up to the sound of a raging thunder. Sa isipin niya pa lang nang mga oras na iyon ay hindi magiging maganda ang araw niya.

Kasama siya ngayon sa mga estudyante ng SVU na nagsisiksikan sa mahabang waiting shed sa labas ng university nila.

Her class was supposedly about to start at 7 am, but half an hour had passed, and their instructor hadn't arrived yet. It was then, that their president dropped the bomb on the class.

"Wala na raw klase. Nagbaba na ng memo sa main campus na suspended din ngayong araw."

They all groaned in frustration.

Nicka found it annoying how the officials did not consider the struggle of students commuting just to attend a 7 am class on a very gloomy day - if she wasn't a diligent student, Nix would have just stayed at home snuggled up in her blankets instead.

"Huy, huwag naman magtulakan!"

"Aray, putangina."

"Wala na, muka na akong basang sisiw!"

Students raced to get in the jeepney that had stopped in front of them. Nicka watched how the empty public utility jeepney had turned into a noisy pack of a sardine-like vehicle now. She just sighs in frustration.

On the other hand, only half of the students are now under the shed, making it a bit more comfortable to be in than earlier.

Another jeepney made a stop in front of them after almost half an hour. Although it already had a few passengers, the students did not waste any more time. They went in regardless of how tight and skimpy the space could be.

Again, Nicka did not dare to hop in.

She would rather freeze in the cold than be knee-to-knee with the other passengers.

Nicka looked down at her mud-stained shoes. Her jacket was also almost as wet as her hair now.

"Hay, buhay."

It was only she, who was left under the waiting shed. Luckily, another jeepney made a stop. The rain subsided into a drizzle. She chose to sit in the passenger seat in front because she hates it when people get too close to her.

"Kuya, wait!"

The driver hit the brake as a new student came to hop in. Nicka's eyes grew wide when she saw who it was from the rearview mirror.

"Makikisuyo po ng bayad," Dahlia handed the fare to an elderly man a few seats from herself.

'Mabuti na lang walang pasok. Late na sana ako kung meron, hehe.'

Dahlia thought to herself.

Nicka's dorm apartment was about a ten-minute ride, but it took longer than usual because of the heavy traffic.

"Mama, para."

She heard a woman from behind her seat say, and the jeep halted to a stop. The woman had three kids, two in a school uniform and one who looked like a toddler. Suddenly, the rain started pouring hard again.

"Patay," she heard the woman whisper to herself.

All the passengers watched with pity how the mother and her children started getting wet as they hopped off the jeepney.

"Kuya, wait lang po." Nicka turned her head to look at Dahlia, who hurriedly came down the vehicle to chase the woman with three children, before handing them her umbrella.

"Saglit, Manong."

The driver was about to hit the gas when Nicka stopped him. She asked the driver to wait a couple of seconds before she exited the vehicle and shrugged off her jacket to run back to where Dahlia was.

A chill ran down her spine when Dahlia saw the jeepney's red light go off, signaling it was already moving, leaving her. A mixture of surprise and relief washed over her when she saw the vehicle come to a stop, and the passenger door flew open.

Dahlia saw Nicka running in her direction with a nude color windbreaker over her head. She wasted no time and met with the freshman. Nicka signaled her to come under the jacket before running back to the jeepney.

Now, Nicka chose to sit beside Lia at the back with the other passengers.
