The large Jeep pulled up to the school. It was a spring day, a bright sunny one in the middle of March, which was surprising in Muskoka.
But Courtney had never been more devastated to see her very own school. The tall gates of Wawanakwa High had never seemed more intimidating as she stared at them from the car window.
Slowly, Courtney turned her head to look at her mother, who had a disappointed look on her face and a tight-lipped frown on her lips.
"Mom-" Courtney started, but was quickly cut off by her mother.
"I'll see you at the end of the day." her mother interrupted curtly, barely making eye-contact with her daughter."You know, I'm sorry-"
"I said I'll see you. You better study the whole time."
Courtney sighed, giving up on trying to make it up to her mother as she climbed out of the car.She clutched her lunch and took a deep breath in as she walked into the school, pushing the double-doors into the hallway.
Who would've thought? President of the student council, Courtney Satella- at school on a Saturday for detention. A detention. You should've heard the long lecture her parents gave her the day the school called them.
It was a stupid reason, really. During a test, she knocked over a ton of textbooks, and it was like the universe was not on her side, because the teacher she had was Mrs. Freedman, the strictest and angriest one she knew.
Courtney tried, really tried to get herself out of it- to maintain her squeaky-clean permanent record she'd been perfecting for years. But now, because of some stupid textbooks, she was spending her Saturday holed up in the school library for detention.
She walked in, the smell of books and wood familiar to her as she'd spent many hours studying in this very room. It didn't bother her being in the library, what bothered her was the reason why.
The room was filled with four other people, coincidentally all sophomores in Courtney's grade. She recognised them.
In the front row, was DJ. He was the quarterback of the football team, which made you think he was a douchebag, but he was the nicest guy she knew.
On the other side of the library, in the second row were two light-haired teens. She knew Bridgette, she was your typical blonde surfer, all about saving animals and that stuff, and the other blonde, Geoff, was like the number-one party thrower.
Courtney tried to avert her eyes at the guy in the back. Duncan. He was lying back in his chair, his feet on the table as he ran a hand through his green-black hair. The no-good delinquent, the kind your parents warn you to stay away from.
Last year, he was gone for like six months, and Courtney even heard a rumour he was serving time in juvie.
She decided her best option was to sit with DJ, so that's what she did. She quickly made a bee-line towards the front of the room, greeting him with a smile as she pulled up a chair.DJ returned the gesture as soon as the principal, Mr. McClean walked into the library, making a screeching noise as the door closed.
"Hello, students." he grinned, as if he was enjoying this. "You all know why you're here." he nodded, glancing down at the watch on his wrist."I shouldn't be here." Courtney chirped, tilting her chin up as she waited for the principal's response.
"Ms. Satella, if you're here, you're supposed to be here." Mr. McClean drawled, looking around at the room. "No talking. I'll see ya in eight hours!" he winked, too happy about this whole ordeal. He turned on his heel, closing the door behind him with a thud that echoed throughout the tall room.Courtney slumped in her seat as her eyebrows knitted together in anger.
"You okay?" DJ whispered, glancing over at her.
"Fine," Courtney huffed as she tucked a brown strand of hair behind her ear."Princess not likin' it?" she heard a voice say, coming from the back of the room. Her jaw almost dropped when she turned around to see it was Duncan, looking down at her with some stupid smirk plastered across his face.
"Excuse me?" she seethed, looking up at him. What kind of stupid nickname was that?
Duncan stared at her as everyone else looked at him. "My name is Courtney." she scowled, which got a reaction out of him, alright.
"Oh, I know your name." he grinned, leaning on the table and getting closer to her.
"You're supposed to be in your seat, dumbass." Courtney reminded him, trying to get him to leave."Does it look like I care?" he snickered as DJ gulped. "Big guy scared?" Duncan grinned as he tousled his hair.
"Shut up!" Courtney demanded, her voice high-pitched as she shrieked.
"Or what?" Duncan smirked, his teal eyes dropping to her lips for a split-second before darting back up to her brown gaze. What was his problem? Courtney stood up, pushing back her chair and taking a step forward as they had some weird fucked-up staring contest. There was less than an inch between their faces.
"Guys, let's calm down." a voice said, Geoff, Courtney realised as the cowboy-hatted-guy stood in between them. Courtney swallowed her pride and took a step back, but her eyes still stared daggers at the guy before her.
"I know we're all pissed that we have to waste our Saturday here," Geoff started, putting his hands up in surrender. "Some more than others." he looked between Courtney and Duncan.
"But we're here regardless, so just try to enjoy it?" he shrugged as Bridgette rolled her eyes."I'm sure he can." Courtney said curtly, gesturing toward Duncan. "He's probably here every Saturday."
"Oh, yeah, Princess- you know it." he smirked, the sides of his sly mouth tipping up. Courtney couldn't help the rolling of her eyes. That nickname was getting really old, really fast.
Courtney decided she'd be better off being quiet and studying with the textbooks she'd brought.
She began to work out math problems to pass the time, while also helping her ace the test she had on Monday.Well, more like she tried- because no one would stop fucking talking.
"Mr. McClean said no talking!" Courtney suddenly shrieked, her high-pitched yell echoing through the library as an uncomfortable silence settled over them. Everyone went silent and even she gasped at herself."Are you okay?" Bridgette asked, scratching the back of her neck awkwardly.
"Fine." Courtney replied, her eyes widening at her sudden breakdown. "Sorry. I, uh..." she racked her brains for words, but she found none."Princess here just had a tantrum." Duncan snickered, much to Courtney's dismay.
Oh, of course that stupid green-haired douchebag had to say something about it!"Can't you shut your big mouth for once?!" Courtney blurted out, slamming her heavy textbook close, which was a deafening noise.
"STOP!" Bridgette practically yelled, stomping her foot on the ground as everyone turned their heads towards her. "Everyone, chill." she sighed, leaning back on the heels of her hands.
"And do what?" Courtney arched an eyebrow. She didn't even know these people, but she had very strong feelings about them already, specifically negative ones, specifically towards the green-haired ones.
"Got any ideas?" Bridgette asked, shrugging as her blonde ponytail swished.
It was silent for a moment, before stupid Duncan broke it.
"I have one."...

i hope you all enjoyed the first chapter of it all started with detention, because i enjoyed writing it! i've never written a kb5 (killer bass five) fanfic- i've only written duncney ones, with the rest of kb5 as side-characters. but i've always loved them, so i thought why not make a new fic about them!! this will not ONLY revolve around duncney (obviously, but just making it clear). gidgette aren't together yet if you thought they were, so you get to see them develop as a couple (very, very season one vibes!!).
i hope you all will like this fic, because im already loving it!! love yall! - j
