The weekend arrived with clear skies and a crisp breeze that carried the scent of pine through Pine Hollow. Seren had been looking forward to a weekend escape with Emily. They had planned a low-key evening of movies, snacks, and talking until the early hours of the morning.
But, as always, things didn't go according to plan.
Seren's phone buzzed early Saturday morning, and she saw a text from Emily.
Emily: Ugh, I feel terrible. Got hit with a fever out of nowhere. Gonna have to cancel tonight, sorry 😞
Seren sighed, staring at the screen, a mixture of disappointment and concern flooding her. She quickly typed back.
Seren: Oh no! Are you okay? Do you need anything?
Emily: I'm fine, just need to rest. You go enjoy your weekend!
Seren: Feel better, Em. Let me know if you need anything.
Seren stood in front of her closet, her mind still lingering on Emily's last text. The familiar hum of the small town surrounded her—birds chirping, the faint sound of distant lawnmowers, and the occasional rustle of leaves. She needed to get out. Her hands reached for a simple jacket, and without thinking too much about it, she grabbed her bag and headed out the door.
The fresh air hit her like a splash of cold water, calming some of the anxious energy that had been bubbling beneath the surface. She walked aimlessly, letting her feet take her wherever they wanted. The winding path led her to the park, a place she and Emily had frequented countless times when they were younger.
The park was mostly empty, except for a couple of families with young children running around. The trees here were old and towering, providing a sense of calm and stability that Seren always found reassuring. She started walking along a trail that she had come so accustom to, it lead to her favourite spot in the woods.
The air was thick with the scent of pine and earth as Seren made her way through the woods. The sound of her footsteps crunching on the leaves filled the silence, the familiar trail providing a sense of calm. She had always loved these woods, the way they seemed to stretch endlessly, a hidden world just outside the edges of Pine Hollow. It was a place she could escape to when everything felt too overwhelming, a refuge from the complicated dynamics at home.
As her mind wandered, she thought about that day in the woods—the intensity in Elijah's eyes. Seren was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't see him at first.
She rounded a bend in the trail, her eyes focused on the canopy above, when she collided with something solid. She gasped, stumbling backward.
"Whoa, easy there."
Seren blinked in surprise, looking up to find none other than Elijah standing in front of her, steadying her with his hands gently on her shoulders. His touch sent a wave of warmth through her, and she quickly stepped back, her heart racing from the unexpected encounter.
"Elijah?" she said, her voice breathless.
He raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his usually serious expression. "Seren. Are you always this clumsy, or do I just bring it out of you?"
She blushed, brushing her hair behind her ear. "I wasn't paying attention."
Elijah smiled, but it was different this time—softer, almost playful, in a way that caught Seren off guard. "I noticed," he teased. "You've got to watch where you're going. Who knows what you might run into?"
She gave a half-laugh, the tension between them shifting into something lighter, almost easy. "What are you doing here?" she asked, still trying to calm her racing heart.
"Just getting some fresh air," he said, shrugging. "Thought I'd check out the trails. You seem to like them."
Seren nodded. "Yeah, I come here a lot. It's peaceful."
"I can see why," Elijah said, glancing around. "What brings you out here today?"
She didn't answer right away, unsure of how much to tell him.
"Well, Emily's sick," Seren said after a moment. "We were supposed to hang out this weekend, but..."
"Ah, that explains the solo walk." Elijah's expression softened. "Mind if I join you? I promise not to make you trip again."
Seren smiled despite herself, surprised by his shift in mood. He usually carried this quiet intensity with him, but now there was something almost playful in the way he spoke, a sharp contrast to the Elijah she'd encountered before.
"Sure," she said, gesturing to the path ahead. "It's not like I had any other plans."
They walked in silence for a few moments, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot and the distant hum of the town filling the air. Seren stole a glance at him, curious about this new side of him. There was something relaxed about him today, like he wasn't carrying the same weight he usually did.
"You know," Elijah began, his voice breaking the silence, "I'm not always so... serious."
Seren raised an eyebrow, surprised by the admission. "Could've fooled me."
He chuckled, and the sound was low and warm. "Yeah, I guess I give off that vibe." He glanced over at her, his dark eyes softer than she'd ever seen them. "But I wasn't always like this."
She hesitated, unsure if she should ask. "What changed?"
Elijah didn't answer immediately, his gaze focused on the path ahead. The playful air between them seemed to shift slightly, as if the question had brought him back to something he was trying to forget.
"Life, I guess," he said after a beat, his voice quieter. "Things happen. You grow up. You learn to be careful."
Seren nodded, understanding that there were things he wasn't ready to share yet. But still, there was a part of her that longed to reach out, to understand him better. There was something about Elijah that drew her in, something beyond the mystery and the danger. It was in moments like these, when he let his guard down, that she felt the pull even stronger.
"So," she said, trying to lighten the mood again, "if you're not always serious, what do you do for fun?"
Elijah's lips curved into a smile, one that made her heart skip a beat. "I don't know. What do you consider fun?"
She thought for a moment, caught off guard by his teasing tone. "Well, hanging out with Emily, sketching, sometimes reading."
"Reading?" he repeated, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Wild."
"Hey!" she laughed, nudging him with her elbow. "What about you, then? What do you do when you're not being all mysterious?"
Elijah looked up at the sky, pretending to consider. "I like running," he said, grinning. "Chasing things."
Seren shot him a skeptical look. "Chasing things? Like what, squirrels?"
He gave her a sideways glance. "Something like that."
They walked a bit further, and Seren realized how easy it felt, this back-and-forth with him. Elijah, who had always seemed so intense and distant, was showing a side of himself she hadn't expected—a side that was funny, teasing, even playful.
"I'll bet you'd be terrible at a game of tag," she said, testing the waters.
Elijah's eyebrow quirked. "Is that a challenge?"
Seren smirked. "Maybe."
Before she could react, Elijah took off running, a burst of energy that left her momentarily stunned.
"Hey!" she shouted, laughing as she chased after him.
Elijah looked back, a grin on his face, and for a moment, everything felt simple. The mystery, the tension, the unspoken pull between them—it all faded into the background as they ran through the woods, laughter echoing among the trees.
