Mithun

“Hurry, take out the lunch boxes,” I urge her as we sit on the soil ground nourished with green grasses.

“Are you so hungry as well?” she questions in surprise while unzipping her backpack and retracting the lunch boxes. “I'm not—but from the moment you said that you would cook for me, I wanted to taste it so badly,” she brightens up at my comment but then her expression falters.

“Don't have high expectations, mama...I am not the best at cooking,” my heart melts at her whisper.

“Take it out first,” she swiftly picks the boxes out and the aroma of the food instantly whips my senses.

“What have you prepared? The aroma is very strong,” she grins at my question. “Open it and look for yourself, mama! It's one of your favorite foods,” I was excited as I removed the lid. I've never really tried anything that was cooked by Ganga...

It was rasam rice and fried fish. It appeared delicious but I can't say anything for sure until I have it.

“Mama, what are you thinking? Eat it and tell me how it tastes! I'm waiting,” I look at her in surprise upon listening to her English words. “Hm? It's new, you are talking in English suddenly,” she smiles cheekily. “All because of you,” I shake my head at her and dig into the food.

It was okay. Not great but it's tolerable.

“Mama, why do look like that? Is the food not good?” she inquires with a worried mien. “It's average,” she pouts cutely. Argh, that's tempting...

“Don't do that with your lips. I might eat your lips instead of the food you cooked,” she becomes alert at my words and purses her lips.

“Um...sorry mama, I'll try to cook well the next time,” I give her an adoring look. “It's fine, not a big deal. Whether it is tasty or tasteless, I would eat whatever you cook for me,” her eyes light up as she sees me.

“Mama...I didn't know you were so loving,” she says in a naive way but it sounded like mockery. “Really?” she hums in response and begins to have her food. We passed our time with random conversations and once we were done, we cleaned our hands using bottled water.

“Come, let me drop you in college,” I usher her to the car but she doesn't move. “I don't want to let you go,” I don't want to either. Although it's hurtful, we are left with no other choice. And this separation—it's only for a month.

“Ganga, after a month, we'll be together always and will spend our time merrily with each other! So now, instead of being burdened, try to enjoy your bachelor life as much as you can. Because you see—once we're married, I won't let you sleep peacefully for even a night,” She blinks at my comment.

“Do you snore very loud mama?” I give her a dumbfounded gaze.

She's teasing me. She sure knew what I meant. “I know you're well aware of what I intended to say. Don't act like an innocent kid now,” she looks down, shyly.

“Alright...” I trail off and pinch her blushing cheeks. I couldn't help kissing them either. “May I kiss you...?” I query, my eyes stuck on her lips. She notices it and shakes her head negatively. “I told you already that we would do this after marriage,” Pch, I so want to kiss her. “Just one...” I ask again but she doesn't let me kiss her. “No mama,” I was a bit annoyed.

“Fine, come,” we both hop into the car and I start driving to her college, quite grumpily. She was still seated on the floor of the car and was observing me keenly. But I don't mind her though...

“Drive faster mama. The lunch break will end soon,” She says in a troubled tone.

“Hm...” I hum and drove a bit faster.

“Are you angry with me, mama?” her dubious question made me glance her way. “No, I'm so happy, can't you see it, Ganga?” I sarcastically respond.

“No mama,” she deadpans...

“Right, it's time to have you wear a spectacle,” she hisses at my words, and her features turn sharp.

“Enough mama! I know you're angry,” she puts forth, sounding harsh. This might be the first time that I've heard her being furious. It's fascinating...

“You know it already, right? Then why even ask whether I was angry,” she grimaces at me. She's adorable!

“I can't believe you're being so cranky about a kiss mama...” she states in a fed-up tone.

“Shut up,” she glares at me.

“Fine, come, kiss me,” I don't react immediately. “I don't want to,” she defeatedly sighs at my reply. “Why do you get so angry for simple things mama!? I despise it!” I regard her with a frown. She's never spoken to me in this manner...

I liked it, it was good seeing her being open with me.

“So you don't like me, huh? Should we stop this marriage then? I can search for a person for you who remains as calm as Gandhiji, 24/7,” she grimaces at me.

“You're talking too much mama!” she sounds dangerous. “It was you who's speaking too much!” I deliberately say that to pull her legs.

“No, I'm not talking too much! You are the one who is getting indignant for meager things,” I was surprised, to say the least. I rapidly pull over the car to the side. “Are you in periods?” If not, it's hard to believe her behaving like this...

“How did you find out?” she queries doubtfully. “You're out of character today. You don't talk so much or get fierce otherwise,” she nods.

“I don't know mama, I feel so uncomfortable. I want to beat up someone!! These five days—I don't have control over my emotions mama,” I softly watch her. “And I made you more stressed, huh?” she didn't respond but I knew I was at fault. “I'm sorry ma,” I slant down and place a quick kiss on her forehead.

“My anger has vanished now, you can kiss me now,” I pass a small smile in her direction. “No, I'll touch my wife only after marriage,” she chuckles at my lame words. “I can't, mama,” as she continues to cackle, my gaze runs to her glowing face.

“You look so beautiful when you laugh,” her mood abruptly alters and in the place of laughter, now sits a timid smile. “And Ganga, I like it when you speak openly with me. Instead of always agreeing with me and saying okay mama and yes mama, try giving your opinion,” she nods her head.

“Just as you wish,” she peeks into my eyes, lovingly. “Sweetheart,” I pinch her nose and she giggles...

I'm so going to miss her.
