Ganga

“What was that sound akka?” My sister queries in a sluggish voice. “What sound? What are you talking about? I didn't hear anything,” I acted naive but internally, I was trembling.

“I heard something like ch...ch...” she dubiously states and I embarrassedly bite my lower lip.

“It might be the lizard on the wall, don't bother about it, just go to sleep...” she hums confusedly but retires to slumber again. I sigh as I've successfully escaped from being caught by my sister. After a while, when I heed her soft snores, I quickly pick up my phone and ring my mama.

He must be indignant with me!

With worry, I latch the phone to my ear and he attends within the first few rings. “Mama, I'm so sorry, my sister woke up...that's why I'd to hang up,” he doesn't respond for a few seconds and then he says, “Podi,” (Just go) in a dismissive tone.

“Mama, don't be angry; If you want, I can give you lots of kisses again,” he sighs on the other end. “You don't have to do anything henceforth...” he sounds quite fed-up.

“Mama...sorry,” I apologize—feeling remorseful. “That's okay,” he gently answers and that makes a smile tickle my brims.

“Have you finished the massage mama!? Did it lessen your headache?” I implore eagerly to know about his health condition. “Yes, I finished it and the pain is better now...” I was so relieved!

“After you marry me, I'll do the massage for you, okay? And the headache will vanish within seconds!” I put forth determinedly while Mama began to crack up on the other end.

Huh? What is funny about this? Did I say a joke or something?

“Sure ma, you've to do the massage,” but why does he sound so teasy?

“Why are you laughing then?” my tone drips with perplexion as I question him.

“No, it's just...I thought about your innocence and couldn't help cackling,” I had a frown on my countenance as I tried to decipher the meaning behind his words. My innocence made him laugh?

“I don't get it,” I express lowly as I fail to get a grip on the situation. “You don't have to get it now; let some days pass by, I'll teach you everything on my own,” Oh If he says so...

“Okay mama then, take care of yourself and rest well, good night,” I state as I feel myself becoming sleepy.

“Seri ma, take care, bye,” he disconnected the call while I kept mulling over what he'd said. I just couldn't comprehend anything...and eventually, I found myself being tugged into the pool of nothingness.

Days rolled by with our routine of speaking at night and today, a guy from my class proposed to me. His name was Nathan and he's quite an unruly one in class. I haven't even spoken to him much...

I immediately told him that I was not interested but he was pushy and asked me to think and say my answer...

What's even there to think about? Apart from the lack of a nuptial chain on my neck and vermillion on my hair partition, I'm living life while regarding my mama as my husband. Except for him, no other could dig any place in my heart.

On the same day, when our classes were dismissed and I was sauntering ahead to the entrance with Maalini by my side, Nathan blocked our way with his bike and paused our steps.

“What do you want!?” Malini holds my wrist and asks the guy with a glare. “I'm here to talk to Ganga, not you,” he neglects her and darts his attention to me.
