"MADDIE!" Vera yelled across the cafeteria, waving her hand in the air, and beckoning the blonde over. "Come over here!" the tall girl called, much to the dismay of the boy beside her.
"Vee..." Vincent murmured, his hand covering his eyes to hide from the attention Vera drew to the table.
Madeline walked over to them, a grin on her face as she placed her tray of food down on the table. Vera stood up and wrapped her arms around the other girl, swaying from side to side while laughing. "I missed you so much!" the dark-haired girl squealed, squeezing her friend tightly.
"You saw me a week ago!" Madeline chuckled, pulling away from Vera and sitting down next to Vincent. "Vince! I love the hair," she said, ruffling her friend's bleached hair.
"Thanks," he grinned, resting his chin on his palm as he leaned against the table. "my mom hates it."
"Yeah, well your mom hates everything you do, man," Vera said while chewing on her sandwich, slumped back in her chair.
Maddie laughed, pulling out a small bottle of hand sanitizer from her bag and cleaning her hands thoroughly with the alcohol before she decided they were clean enough to touch food with.

"Sayuri," Chen spoke, picking absentmindedly at his salad as he watched the golden blonde twirl her hair between her fingers. "Who are you staring at? Wallis? Sayu, you know he's gay." he scoffed disapprovingly, ruffling her hair.
"God," Sayuri hummed, way too distracted to even notice her friend as she mumbled dreamily. "she's so cool." she sighed, a smile on her face as she stared out into the crowd.
Chen craned his neck, squinting as he tried to find the girl she was referring to. "Who?" he asked, furrowing his eyebrows before glancing back at Sayuri. "'She' doesn't really narrow it down much."
Sayuri didn't seem to hear him and just carried on staring at the mysterious figure, her lips curved up into a serene grin. Suddenly her face seemed to light up, her cheeks flushing when the girl she had been ogling turned around and locked eyes with Sayuri's.
Vera Carter shot up out of her seat and walked over to the table, ignoring the protests of her friends. Sayuri stood up as well, giggling as she got pulled into a hug by the taller girl. Chen seemed confused. How come he's never seen this girl, that one of his closest friends seems to know very well, before?
"You dyed your hair! Seems everyone is doing that..." Vera laughed once she pulled away from the hug, playing with the smaller girl's messy pigtails. "I like this hair color on you, it's cute."
Sayuri and Vera continued to leisurely chat for a few more minutes before the ravenette took notice of Chen's presence. "Oh, sorry, hi." Vera nervously laughed, turning to the boy to say hello.
"Hi..." Chen replied, eyeing her suspiciously for a moment as if she was trying to steal his friend away. He opened his mouth to speak again but before he had a chance to say anything, he yelped, nearly jumping out of his seat when a pair of hands suddenly settled on his shoulder. "Dude! Get your wet hands off me!"
"Oops- sorry," Oliver laughed, pulling his hands away and wiping them haphazardly on his white button-up shirt. "forgot to dry them in the bathroom..."
"Wait- are you Vera?" Oliver suddenly asked, staring at the tall girl standing next to Sayuri with wide eyes for a moment before breaking out into a goofy grin. "I didn't know you went here, too! I can't believe Sayu managed to tell me every single thing about you except for the fact that you go to the same school as us."
Sayuri blushed, looking down at her feet and twirling the ends of her hair nervously while swaying back and forth on the balls of her feet. Vera smirked, wrapping her arm around the girl and looking down at her with a mocking look in her eyes. "You've only known me since June and you're already obsessed, tsk."

Madeline was stressed. Very stressed. The cafeteria was loud with tons of people coughing and a whole lot of noise, exactly what made her panic every time. Her anxiety was through the roof, and now Vera's dragging her through the unfamiliar halls to meet with a group of people she was new best friends with. It felt like a nightmare.
Vincent held the blonde's hand as they walked out of the cafeteria to the yard like he always did when he could tell she was anxious.
They made their way over to the picnic bench where three teens were sitting and Madeline could feel her heart beating out of her chest, something Vincent noticed since she could feel him squeeze her hand a little tighter, refusing to let go.
"Oh, it's you!" she heard someone say in a bright and cheery tone. Madeline looked up and saw Oliver, the boy she recognized as the one with the buzzcut and weird Instagram username, grinning at her. Their 'conversation' had been cut short earlier by Mrs. Wilton, something that had greatly disappointed Oliver and somewhat annoyed Madeline.
"Oh..." she replied feebly, her gaze falling to the ground again.
Oliver's eyebrows furrowed at the sight, feeling a wave of shame wash over him. "Shit. I'm being annoying." he thought to himself, a blush spreading over his face. "Hey, are you oka-" he started, reaching out to brush his hand against her arm.
Madeline jerked away, eyes wide with panic as she rubbed the spot on her arm he almost touched with her hand. "Sorry-" she quickly whimpered under her breath, dropping Vincent's hand and wiping at her eyes as she started to jog back into the building, leaving Oliver sitting there looking dumbfounded as Vincent ran after her.
