Sophia answered a knock on the door, but when she opened it there was nobody there. She walked along the front porch but didn't spot anyone in the distance or the sound of shoes hitting the ground in a rush. She was about to go back inside when he foot hit something. Curiously, Sophia picked it up and went inside.
"Where did you get that?" Sophia's mom asked when she saw the strange looking box adorned with stars on her daughter's lap.
"I don't know. It was on the porch." Sophia studied the box, perplexed. It was decorated with elaborate patterns resembling stars, and in the center was a button with her name on it in white calligraphy in the heart of a golden star. Two white horses with golden manes adorned the tomb and bottom of the elevated circle where the star with her name was. It looked more like some kind of toy.
Sophia pressed the button with her name and the two horses began to move like figurines in a music box. They chased one another and stopped to unlock the box. Inside was a letter and a pamphlet for some kind of ridding camp or something.
Sophia's eyes widened when he picked up the letter and unfolded it. She read the words aloud. "We are pleased to invite you to attend Nuncior Academy: The world's leading school for promising equestrian riders!" Sophia opened the pamphlet and she jumped up from the ottoman in the living room as though it were on fire.
"A school where I get to ride all day? It looks amazing! Mom, can I go?"
"Can I have her room?" Marco's screamed from the doorframe, his mouth filed with flapjacks.
"What about your school here?" Sophia's mom asked, brows furrowed with worry.
"Uh, they don't let me bring a horse to class. And it's not like anyone would miss me."
"I would." Sophia's mother exclaimed, visibly hurt. "And so would your brother."
"The new bedroom would heal the pain." Marco said, trying to liven the mood. His mother raised an eyebrow, unamused and Marco made his leave, saying he was going to finish his pancakes and headed back into the kitchen.
"Mom, I know you worry about me, but this could be an amazing opportunity for me. Besides, you're always saying how I need to make new friends, what better way than with fellow riders like me?"
Sophia wasn't a fan of trying to soften her mom with the promise of making friends, but in a way, Sophia wasn't entirely lying. Though she denied it, a small part of her did long for someone who understood her. Understood her love of ridding, of freedom and maybe, understand her pain of losing her father. Nobody understood her the way her father did, so when he passed she felt all alone in the world. Maybe, fellow riders were what she needed.
Sophia clenched the star-shaped necklace around her neck. "I just have this feeling that this is where I'm meant to go."
"I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a good idea."
"What? Seriously? Mom, this is a ridding academy, this is my dream." Sophia folded her arms, brows furrowed. "Dad would want me to go. If he were here—"
"But he's not!"
Sophia felt a jab in her chest. Talking about her father was a sour subject for the both of them. Sophia remembered how much her parents loved each other, sometimes to a sickeningly extent, but she was happy and fortunate to have such loving and supportive parents. Now, all Sophia's mother wanted was to keep her from suffering the same fate as her father. Her died in a ridding accident and Sophia knew that the memory haunted her mother. But Sophia just couldn't stop ridding. It was in her blood, her nature. Ridding kept her father's spirit alive, but her mother would rather burry that than allow the memory of Miles live on through his shared passion with his daughter.
