On James' birthday, I got into a car accident on my way home and died on the spot.
My soul floated in the air, longing to see James one last time. That's when I saw him bringing Emma—his one true love—back to our house.

In the dim light, Emma's delicate face flushed from the alcohol, leaning weakly against James like she was completely out of it.
"James, James..." she murmured softly. James held her waist steady, gently brushing her messy hair aside, patiently answering her every call.
The usually distant James was showing a tenderness I had never seen before.

Even though I had mentally prepared for this moment, watching it unfold still made my heart ache.

Ever since James found out that Emma got divorced, he's been distracted, coming home less and less, and growing colder towards me. I did some digging and found out that Emma's ex-husband's company went bankrupt, and he ran off with the money. After the divorce, Emma found out she was pregnant, and debt collectors have been hounding her every day, scaring her so badly that she almost had a miscarriage a few times.

Lately, James has been spending all his time at the hospital with her. The reason we fought was because he wanted to bring Emma home so he could take care of her.

"Emma's parents helped me out before. I can't just abandon her." My eyes reddened. "Is that the only reason?"
James stayed silent for a moment, then suddenly put out his cigarette. "I told you I'd marry you."
"Annie, what are you so afraid of?"

What was I afraid of? James knew deep down, but he pretended not to. That night, I lost control of my emotions and, for the first time, suggested we break up.

James' face grew darker. Without saying a word, he pulled me into the bathroom and turned on the shower. "Do you even know what you just said?"
I stood there trembling, hugging myself as his tall figure loomed closer. In a swift motion, he ripped open his shirt, buttons flying, and bit down on my lip, almost as if punishing me.

"Annie, never talk to me about breaking up again."

Cold water poured over us, while his scorching breath trailed down my neck, his face becoming a blur. "Emma's only staying for a while. Once the police find her ex-husband, I'll send her away," he whispered against my earlobe. "There's nothing between us anymore."

I gasped, struggling, eyes closed, threatening him, "The only way I'll agree is if I'm dead."

And then, I really did die.
