"Leopardfur. Don't die!" howled Ripplelight. Leopardstar's chest was heaving, her breath coming in ragged gasps now. "Don't...worry, my son. Mistyfoot will lead the Clan now. Perhaps she will be a better leader than me," she rasped, giving his tawny head a lick, as she had done when he was still in the nursery.
"But it won't be the same." whispered Ripplelight. "You're all that I have left, except for Waveflower and Woodshine. I've lost Frogleap, Sedgecreek, Dawnflower, Currentkit and Troutkit; I can't bear to lose you too!"
Opening her mouth to comfort him, Leopardstar only managed a weak cough. Shadows were creeping in her mind. "I've lived a good life, Ripplelight. I had a mate and kits...and became leader too. Let me go, and embrace the future," she breathed, then allowed the shadows to fill her mind. She let out one long breath, and fell still.
Leopardstar's spirit rose from her body. She could see Ripplelight wailing out loud over her body, grief-stricken. "He will be alright," a voice behind her murmured. "Frogleap!" she nuzzled her mate. "Dawnflower is waiting for us, Leopardstar, as well as the rest of your friends and kin. Come, let's go."
And so, she left the living world forever as her Clan gathered around her dead body.
