chapter 11: anniversary

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ The couple have been back in Japan for two days now and are slowly adjusting back to their usual time zone. Y/N's been taking the most time to get over the jet lag, giving Kenma ample time this particular morning to prepare breakfast for the two of them. A rare occurrence, as the girl almost always wakes up before him.

Wanting to attempt something a little different, he decides to try his hand at souffle pancakes. He's a little unsure of how it'll turn out, never really being the best in the kitchen, but is determined to give the recipe his best shot.

It takes him a good hour and a couple of burnt attempts before he places two of the best looking pancakes on a plate and topping them off with some fruit and syrup. He sets up all the food on a breakfast tray, adding a bouquet of flowers as a nice touch and carefully makes his way back to the bedroom.

Once in the room, he sets the tray down on the bed gently, making sure that it won't topple over, then gives all his attention to the sleeping girl.

"N/N," he calls out, rubbing Y/N's shoulders a bit to stir her awake, "Let's eat."

Seeing that she was still fast asleep, Kenma climbs into bed next to her and lighty presses kisses onto her cheeks.

"Ken, what are you doing?" Y/N grumbles a bit. Still groggy from being jet-lagged and having just woken up, she presses her face into Kenma's chest to avoid the attack on her cheeks and try to get some more sleep.

"It's time to get up sleepy, lots to do today. Look, I made breakfast."

Y/N peeks an eye open to see the display of soft fluffy pancakes and beautiful flowers in front of her and smiles as she brings herself closer to Kenma.

"I'm up. I'm up. Thank you for breakfast and the flowers," She thanks, now being the one to press kisses onto the other's face, "Happy anniversary, Kenma. I love you."

"I love you too."

The couple are now situated on a boat on the Chidorigafuchi moat, recreating their first date like they do every year on their anniversary. Still in the early stages of April, cherry blossoms overlooked the moat and fallen petals graced the waters.

"We go here every year and still.. I can't get over this sight. It's so romantic," Y/N sighs in awe, "Takes me back."

"And every year I still can't believe you didn't think we were on a date our first time coming here."

Y/N puffs her cheeks, then gives her boyfriend a sly smile.

"To be fair, you weren't very clear. I thought we were just hanging out like we usually did."

"I thought I was pretty clear," Kenma shrugs, "For being the smartest person I know, you were really oblivious back then."

"Oh shut up," Y/N hushes, trying to hide her smile, "I figured it out eventually, didn't I?"

"You only figured it out because Tetsuro asked you how it went," He points out.

The girl stays silent, not being able to deny the claim. She remembers how embarrassed she felt at the time when Tetsuro had asked about their first date. Initially thinking that he was just teasing her as older brothers do, she didn't realize until the very next day that he was genuinely asking her and that's when the realization hit. She remembers frantically running across the street to Kenma's to ask him for clarification and receiving Kenma's straightforward confession the moment she mentions the date.

Kenma laughs at the girl's expression, it was clear she was reminiscing about what had happened eight years ago. He can't deny he felt the same eight years ago, but the worry she didn't harbor any feelings (and slight embarrassment from the misunderstanding) he felt has long vanished. Now all he feels about the misunderstanding all those years ago is warmth. Today in particular, he feels grateful for the outcome and how he's able to spend every day of his life with the person he truly adores. Eight years later, they still come to the park, float over the moat until they get hungry, and have a picnic under the blossoms talking about any miniscule detail of their day.

The two walk hand-in-hand strolling around the park to find the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic. The park was packed with people, many families and couples having the same idea of spending the day under the beautiful blossoms, making it slightly difficult for the couple to find a somewhat secluded area.

However, the further back they went the less populated the area became. When they eventually reached an area where only a handful of people were within sight, the couple began to place down their blanket and start unpacking the basket.

With them they've brought sandwiches that Y/N made and a slice of store-bought cake to share between the two of them. Not to mention a new bouquet of flowers, only this time, a bouquet Y/N bought for Kenma.

They take their time eating, conversing, and people watching, making sure to soak up the entirety of this peaceful day and by the time the food is all gone the two are watching the clouds pass by through the branches of the sakura tree they are laying under.

On their first date, the two had already left the park by this time and were heading back home. However, each year they celebrate their anniversary they find themselves spending more and more time at the park. Whether it be because they are both homebodies and never really spend time outdoors or the fond memories they make every time they visit, the two find themselves at ease and can't help but want to stay in the public garden.

By the time they start packing to leave the sun has already started to set. The couple's hands are once again intertwined.

"Y'know, I really can't imagine spending this day with anyone else," Y/N expresses warmly as she turns to face Kenma, her eyes filled with love as the last few sunbeams illuminate her smile.

The warmth radiating off her has left Kenma in such a trance, that it takes almost a whole minute before she gets a response.

"I can't either. I'm glad we've enjoyed many years together," Kenma replies softly, He squeezes her hand and lifts it up a little, as if to make a proclamation.

"To more years together, yeah?"

"To more years," she replies fondly.
