I had never really noticed her before, but now, it was impossible to ignore how perfectly her skin tone complemented her features—her eyes, her brown eyes. They looked so pure and beautiful in the sunlight, but all I could see in them was fear. Was Liza scared of me?I quickly let go of her hand, and as expected, she was furious. But this time, she didn't say anything. No taunt, no angry retort—nothing. She just rushed away, leaving me standing there, confused. Why was I even thinking about her so much? I've seen prettier girls.
Just then, a girl passed by, and I instinctively went along with her.
"Hey, Dhriti," I greeted, turning on my usual charm.
"Hey, Kabir! How are you?" she replied with a smile.
"Nothing much. I was feeling a bit lonely without you."
"Oh, is that so?" she teased.
We continued talking, and for a moment, it felt like I had completely forgotten about what happened with Liza just minutes ago. I was busy again, busy with someone else.
Next Day:
Liza sat inside the classroom, watching Kabir flirt with Dhriti outside. She rolled her eyes, clearly irritated.
"Kabir... The Kabir," Liza muttered under her breath. "What is so special about him? Why do these girls even find him cool? He's so immature and such a flirt. Today, it's Dhriti, and tomorrow it could be anyone. It could even be you, Akshara! Are you listening?"
Akshara, who had been lost in her own thoughts, blinked and looked at Liza. "Oh, were you saying something, Liza?"
"What? Were you not listening to me this whole time?"
"Umm, not gonna lie—I was just thinking about how it hasn't even been a day and how almost every other girl seems to notice Kabir's presence. He is so confident, so bold, and so—"
"—and so loud!" Liza interrupted, her voice dripping with annoyance. "So loud that it annoys me. My ears start to bleed every time he says something."
Akshara chuckled. "Okay, whatever, Liza. You're too stubborn. One day you might end up liking him too."
"That's never going to happen, Akshara. My standards are way too high. Kabir and I? We're not written in the stars. I just know it."
Their conversation was suddenly interrupted by a group of seniors entering the classroom. They were the same ones who had been messing with Liza yesterday.
"Oh no, not them again," Liza whispered urgently. "Akshara, I'm gonna go sit with someone else before they notice me."
Kartik, the senior leader, cleared his throat. "Hello, juniors! I'm Kartik, and I manage the dance society. For the upcoming event, we are selecting juniors. Those who want to join can give their names to the Class Representative. By the way, who's your CR?"
Kabir, ever so confident, stood up. "Who else? It's me."
Kartik smiled. "Wow, Kabir. Alright, everyone can give their names to Kabir." His eyes scanned the room and then narrowed when he saw Liza trying to hide. "Liza, you'll be participating."
"No, sir, I'm not interested," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I didn't ask," Kartik shot back, his tone cold. "You will be participating. That's it. Sit down."
"Any more questions?" he asked, but the class was silent. The group left just as abruptly as they had arrived
Liza was so annoyed. "Why does my life have to be so complicated all the time?" she muttered to herself.
Feeling overwhelmed, she picked up her phone and dialed the number of her only safe place—her friends.
Aadya: "Hi, Lizu! So, how is Kabir?"
Liza: "It's been not even a day, and it's already 'How is Kabir?' instead of 'How is Lizu?'"
Devu: "Is he still head over heels, or do you have a new love interest?"
Liza: "What? Eww, NO! I called you all to tell you how my life has been absolute hell since the day I entered this college. After everything that happened with Kabir..."
She poured out everything to them, not missing a single detail.
Devu: "Okay, so you do have a new love interest! What if Kartik likes you?"
Diksha: "How does he look? Oh, wait—is he tall?"
Liza: "Both of them are tall, much taller than me. Kabir is on the leaner side and has a deep voice, while Kartik is muscular and has a... hot voice."
Suddenly, a voice interrupted.
Kabir: "Oh, so you do consider me special enough to tell your friends about me?"
Liza: "What—what the hell, Kabir?! Can you leave me alone?"
Devu: "Oh my God, is that Kabir? Hi, Kabir!"
Aadya: "Don't disconnect! We want to hear!"
Diksha: "What is he saying, guys? I can't hear anything!"
Liza: "Guys, I'll call you back. Bye!" She quickly disconnected the call.
She turned to Kabir, frustrated. "What is wrong with you, Kabir? Why do you keep annoying me?" That's when she noticed Kabir's t-shirt.
It read: Mona-Liza.
Her eyes widened. "Wow. WOW. No way—why on earth do you have my name on your t-shirt?"
Kabir noticed her staring and quickly tried to explain. "Oh no, it's not what you think it is, Liza."
"Yeah, sure. You pull all this nonsense, and now you want to embarrass me even more," she retorted.
"Please, at least listen to me once," Kabir pleaded.
"Okay, you have two minutes to explain yourself."
Kabir took a deep breath. "First of all, the story I was telling that day—"
Before he could finish, Kartik appeared.
Kartik: "Hey, guys."
Kabir muttered to himself, "Oh no, not now."
Kartik: "What are you guys talking about? Mind if I interrupt?"
Kabir: "Oh, yea—"
Liza: "No, not at all, sir. What's up?"
Kartik: "Nothing much, really. Liza, can you come with me for a minute?"
Liza: "Oh, okay. Kabir, I'll get back to you."
Liza felt a bit guilty leaving Kabir hanging there with his half-explained story, but she figured he deserved it for all the stunts he had been pulling
