As time passed, Kabir and Liza's bond grew deeper, but with that strength came challenges that tested the very foundation of their relationship. Fate seemed determined to push them to their limits, and what was once easy and light now felt heavy with tension.
It began subtly.
"**Liza, do you talk to Kartik?**" Kabir asked one day, his voice tinged with something Liza couldn't quite place.
"**Yeah, Kabir, what happened?**"
"**I told you not to talk to him,**" Kabir's tone hardened.
Liza was taken aback. "**I'm not talking to him because I want to. He's the head of our society; I have to. I've already applied to get myself removed so many times.**"
Kabir's unease lingered. "**Liza, where are you going?**"
Confused, Liza replied, "**To meet Akshara. Why?**"
"**Oh... can you not go today?**"
Liza hesitated but agreed. "**Yeah, sure. Why?**"
"**Nothing, really... we can go out, have a date,**" Kabir said, brushing it off, but the change in him was unmistakable.
As days passed, the questions turned into more restrictions.
"**Liza, can you not go to the party this weekend?**"
Liza frowned. "**Why not? You can come this time.**"
"**Please, I'll feel alone. You can come over that day,**" Kabir pleaded.
Disappointed, Liza reluctantly agreed, though she had been looking forward to the party.
The controlling behavior escalated. "**Liza, I don't want you to go to the meeting.**"
"**What the hell, Kabir?**" Liza's frustration boiled over. "**What has happened to you? You've been restricting me from doing things lately. If something is wrong, we can talk about it.**"
"**No, nothing's wrong.**"
"**Then why? This meeting is important for my career, Kabir!**"
With a sigh, Kabir finally relented. "**Okay, go then.**"
But the meeting didn't go well for Liza. Her mind was consumed with Kabir's sudden change in behavior, and she couldn't concentrate.
When she returned home, she tried to make amends. "**Kabir, I'm back. Can we go out for food? Kabir? I'm sorry, okay? Can we talk? Kabir?**"
When she didn't hear a response, panic started to creep in. She searched the entire house—bedroom, bathroom, every room—until finally, she found him on the terrace, staring into the distance.
"**Kabir, here you are! I've been searching for you. Come, let's go.**"
But Kabir didn't move. His voice was distant. "**Liza, please leave me alone right now.**"
Liza's heart sank. "**What happened, Kabir?**"
"**I don't know. Please, go.**"
"**At least talk to me! You've been avoiding me these days, asking me to stay with you, but then you don't even talk properly. I miss the old Kabir, I really do.**"
Kabir's frustration spilled over. "**Even I miss the old me, okay? Loving you has ruined me.**"
Stunned, Liza took a step back. "**Loving me has ruined you? I've been doing everything to help you, Kabir! I've applied for jobs for you, supported you. How can you say that?**"
"**Just leave me alone, Liza. You're no better than Dhriti. I'm starting to regret this.**"
His words cut deep, and Liza couldn't hold back her tears. "**It's too much now, Kabir. I've been trying to help you, and this is what you say to me?**"
"**Yeah, this is it.**"
"**So, is this it? Is this where it ends?**"
Kabir didn't hesitate. "**Yeah, go now.**"
With tears streaming down her face, Liza rushed off the terrace, packed her things, and left. As she stood downstairs, she glanced back at the building, her heart breaking. Everything—years of effort, love, and dreams—had unraveled in just a few minutes. What had gone wrong? She had no idea.
Kabir remained on the terrace, a beer bottle in hand, staring at a photo on his phone. It was the picture Dhriti had sent him two weeks ago—Liza hugging Kartik. From the moment he saw it, something inside him had snapped. Since then, every time he tried to bring up Kartik, Liza seemed hesitant, and that hesitation fed his doubts and insecurities. He felt betrayed, even though a part of him didn't want to believe it. But the picture was hard to ignore, and the emotional toll was becoming unbearable. He had no energy left to argue, to confront, to feel.
Meanwhile, Liza couldn't understand what had gone wrong. The weight of everything crushed her, and the only solution that made sense was to move out of the city after college ended. The air felt suffocating; the memories of their laughter, kisses, and shared moments now weighed heavy with sadness and pain.
As she stood at the airport, suitcase in hand, Liza glanced back one last time. Her heart still hoped Kabir would come, that maybe one call, one sign from him, could change everything. She was ready to go back if he would just reach out.
But he didn't.
Fate had won. Despite their love, despite the years of shared memories and effort, they couldn't survive the test. Everything they had built had dissolved into nothingness.
